Simply, it is a form of musical distortion. I point to the waveshape form, which is usually broader sawtooth closing even a squarewave, producing quite different harmonics to the original signal compared to a distortion pedal.
well it is quite simple actually, fuzz pedals make my guitar sound fuzzy. not smooth and glassy, not hot and twangy, not scooped and crunchy, but fuzzy! sort of like wool socks for my guitar....
if they dont get it i would play frank zappa's song apostrophe and tell them to listen to jack bruce's bass tone.....
if that still did not work, i would tell them it sounds like i am trying to electrocute some bacon.....
you know, that's a very good question... i suppose i'd probably describe it as "something sort of like a distorted bumblebee". ...but that'd only make sense to my stoner friends.
to the more lucid people I know, I'd probably describe it as "some serious shit".

A good reference point that most people can understand is The Stones "I Can't Get No Satisfaction".....one of the first and most famous fuzz tones in the public consciousness.
I usually tell people that don't understand the term fuzz ... " If I have to explain it , you wouldn't understand anyways" and then see what their reply is.
If a pedal on my board feels ashamed, it needs to find a new home.
