Why not just use a Baritone Guitar?
Hello
This is just a friendly question, not trying to bait anyone or sound like a dick. But to all you drop tuners (A, B primarily) out there, why not use a baritone instead? Obviously money is an issue, but beyond that, what are your reasons for not switching to slightly larger neck and the ability to put heavier gauge strings on? Intonation issues, pickup configurations, too big?
Again, just curious, not saying the baritone is the only way to go....

there are some reasonably priced baritone guitars but the only one i could even remotely even think of wanting is the baritone Jag HH.
i've never go below C though...

I'm not speaking for myself (I primarily play bass now), but I think part of it is that a lot of people around here like shorter scale necks.

Yes, the Jag HH is my baritone and it has since usurped my Jazzmaster and Les Paul. Its a great guitar. Dropping to a B on the Jazz was starting to bend my neck, esp due to the thickness of the strings I used to use.

like bigchiefbc I primarily play bass but I have a baritone and a few normal guitars tuned baritone and they sound different, so it depends on what you are after.

I'd love a bari...I prefer longer scale necks. I wish Fender hadn't discontinued the jag custom (which was really a bass vi)

i'm more of a detuner and open tuner than a drop tuner but having said that...i do have use baritones and even a 6string bass played in a guitar style if needed. i've actually been using light strings and tuning way up lately. i like my strings to be tight so the gauges change with the tuning. low tuning gets thick....high tuning goes light.

Comfort, sound.
running 70-11s on a 25.5" scale guitar, you get enough tension to hold the notes where they belong, and the familiar confortable feel of a guitar you always had. You also get a little of the "note bloom" (BuuwwwAAAAAaaaooooowwwwww) that is less present on the longer scales that I've played.
And also, once properly set up, I can't see or hear any thing bad about a detuned guitar.

I only drop to C#!
I would wet myself for a Baritone Jaguar... or a Bass VI
If you've never heard of this local philly based company... this Baritone plays like a dream....
Check out their guitars... they're called Di Pinto

Re: Why not just use a Baritone Guitar?

that guitar looks sweet!
actually i got a hell of a deal on sunday. i was going to pick up a one spot at sam ash at 10:30 am on sunday and they were closed until noon. guitar center opened at 11 so i drove 25 minutes to get there.
as i was walking around i found a used agile silverburst baritone les paul with an epiphone hardshell case and lace alumitone deathbuckers for $250.00!!!! guitar was near mint with no dings in the finish and the neck was smooth as silk! i went to the counter to buy it and the dude pulled the case out of the back. hello, original pups were in the pocket of the case!!!! my first baritone!!!
heavy!!! tuned to a standard, it has made sonic love with the rocket, and the hype, and the secret destroyer, and the arc flash bacon oscillator, and the great wall, and the trumpet fuzz, and the singing tree........

i have been meaning to post a ngd thread with picks.... maybe i will do it when i get home from work tonight if i can stop playing it....

Never really thought about it.
Must investigate further.

Re: Why not just use a Baritone Guitar?
on the subject of baritones, is it possible/easy to take a normal guitar and simply swap to a baritone neck? For instance, could one take a jaguar and swap the neck and have it be a baritone?

Re: Why not just use a Baritone Guitar?
no, but warmoth makes conversion necks for 25.5" scale guitars. I had one, but I didnt get along with it, probably because I didnt know how to order it to my preferences.

Re: Why not just use a Baritone Guitar?
I was thinking of getting one of those GFS offsets and popping on a baritone neck
Pretty sure it would work...
