One echo pedal to cover several needs

Post by Kojak the Ripper »

Hi there,

I want to keep my pedalboard small/simple as possible (2 wahs, vibe, octave fuzz, fuzz face, volume, reverb)
It's Sixties oriented and has one good hall reverb as far as time/space fx are concerned (Liquid Ambience Vibraphonic). Very lush.

However, i'd like to cover quite a few genres and it seems not best suited for all of them : Surf, spaghetti, rockabilly, proto-punk, acid rock, garage etc

Something like an Echorec seems quite good like the Catalinbread but also the Talisman plate reverb by same builder.
Is the Echorec good enough at slapback (100 ms it says) to fit rockab etc situations ?

I'd have only one space pedal on my board. So it has to be a very polyvalent one. Don't talk me into Strymon/Eventide etc please, those are too complex. Small format preferred.

Are you looking for discrete repeats like a delay pedal, or diffuse reverb sounds? You can have both with something like the Boss RE-2. It nails the spaghetti/surf/rockabilly sound, does great slapback, has an appropriately trashy spring reverb. Simple enough, compact, but also has a wide variety of things you can do with it.

I can recommend delays to you all day, but if you really only want slapback and/or long reverbs that changes things significantly.

It seems like the EHX Canyon would fit the bill perfectly. What’s your signal chain so far?

I have not played one in ages but The Echorec seems like a solid option looking at the manual. I'd be interested if it can do the slapback on the longer "tape heads" and have the quicker tape heads produce a sort of reverb due to short delay times/resonance.

I have been using a condensed pedal chain lately too. My chain is currently Phaser, DBA Evil filter, a Fuzz (infinitely rotating), Space Bender, EAE Dude Incredible.

I use the DBA Spacebender for modulated slap back/psuedo reverb. There are an array of delay signals not unlike the echorec, just seemingly within a much shorter delay time range. Other than adjusting an inner trim pot for overall volume, it is pretty surface level control wise. I can get the Space Bender into slap back and resonant reverb territory pretty easily, and add modulation to it if desired. Very much in the Detroit garage/proto vein of short echo/modulation application. Think Only Lovers Left Alive soundtrack territory. The volume boost is nice as well, I find the added gain really heightens certain frequencies in guitar/amp pairings in a way I really enjoy. I think the way it can interact with sustain and resonate certain frequencies is what makes it so "playable" and "interactive" in my experience. Another perk for me is it does the psychedelic Pumpkins Rhinoceros shimmery modulated guitar sound really well too.

With all that said DBA is least likely to honor the classic reverb sound but it sounds like you have that covered if I read correctly. I think if you are crafty with your knob settings you can use the one or more of the rocker switches to go between a Rockabilly slap back setting to whatever weird proto/garage time-based effect you'd like.

I know it's not hip, but this, imo, is an area where Boss excels. The DD-8 is small and does a bunch of things, including simulated analog and tape delay.

I was going to say before my DBA, my Boss PS-2 ripped for slap back. and the DD series is standard for a reason!

i'm thinking EHX Canyon. i did a comparo thread between the Canyon and TC Flashback v2 that's on here. several useable sounds, self-oscillation in some modes, and quite tweakable with the secondary knob functions that let you dial in a sound closer to what you want than the stock presets.
