Moving to the UK!

Post by 01010111 »

It’s official, I’m moving to the UK! I have a job lined up, and I just got my visa. So, as soon as I finish my notice period at my work I’ll be moving to the UK; so, it’ll be sometime around the end of August. I’m moving to the West Midlands area, but I think it would be rad to meet up with folks regardless of where you’re located.

Does anyone have advice on how to meet people and make friends? I also plan on joining or forming a band. Is there a craigslist equivalent for finding people to play with?

ONE OF US ONE OF US.

Depending on the when and wheres regarding your move, you might try to check out SuperSonic festival - or at least follow Capsule (the promoter behind SuperSonic) for great gigs. As far as meeting people, I've just done it through work and gigs, because I'm boring.

Congrats! Would be cool to do a little UK meetup some time :!!!:

RE the bands, I've had luck with joinmyband, which is kinda shit with people looking for either people for their RHCP cover band, or Super Serious Originals Rock Band in their early 20s who are just about to make it big... But then occasionally a person you might want to play music with?

Facebook groups for musicians in your local area, sadly, aren't a bad idea. As much as I hate facebook.

For friends, I think I have all mine (other than the ones I've had forever since I have always lived here) through work, bands, or signing up to social/hobby groups. I'd just join a sports club / book club / hobby group of some kind, whatever works for you. :idk:

Nice! I’ll let you know where I end up exactly. We should hang out once I get there.

I might actually be able to go to Supersonic! We’ll see, I might be too bogged down with apartment hunting and getting my life set up.

It’s so weird to me that Facebook is still the best place for this kind of stuff. I’ve been using it to see what other expats have been doing for moving stuff, but I didn’t know if there was something better and more UK specific.

Yeah it's bizarre. Maybe there's a UK specific platform other than the one I mentioned, which isn't really used enough to be as good as it is in theory. But then, I did find a band with it. If someone knows what the better version is let me know

Do I remember right that you've been in Korea? I'm impressed and envious of your travels.

Yep, I’ve been living in Seoul for almost five years. Parts of it have been amazing, but it’s hard living here as an expat. So, I’m excited to finally live somewhere where I can read the labels on the packaging.

:thumb: Even if you're still getting settled in, October (and to a lesser degree November) is usually a fairly busy month for gigs.

I landed in the UK! I’m very overwhelmed. I’ve figured out how to get around using public transportation, and I think I’ve figured out how to get the food and supplies I need. I’ve also lined up a place to move into, a bank account(ish), and a phone number(ish).

Some of my initial impressions: the accent’s a lot thicker and harder to understand than I expected, it’s impossible to get anything “official” done after 5pm, and the mix of new and old buildings is amazing and really cool to see.
