How would achieve this fuzzy sound?
Heya, I'm really digging the fuzzy lead sound on this newish Michael Kiwanuka song - seen at around 1.49.
Does anyone know how I could get that sort of sound? I know there's a trem on there, but fuzz wise.
Is it a pedal or a desk thing do you think? He's got a nice 70s vibe going on so I'm assuming it's not just a plug and play, but wondered if anyone who knows more than me could help me out, thank you!

Could be a big muff, the sound is very dark and creamy.

Re: How would achieve this fuzzy sound?
on the lead, yeah? doesn't seem very high gain to me...honestly, i think there are a lot of ways to get into that zone, but muff would be a good option (moreso than, say, fuzz face or any of the garage-ier classic fuzzes, tho some kind of tonebender or buzzaround might work)....
could also be amp gain, or a mix of amp gain and input overload on whatever analog front-end you've got could also do (or a mix).
rather than suggesting things you could buy, maybe you could share a little about your gear (amps and pedals mostly) and your intended usage - recording? gigging out? (if so where? i want a gig!
), just good old-fashioned homejammin'?
overall, it seems likely to be something old school in line with the overall vibe of the recording....

Gorgeous track.
Sounds like there's a lot goin' on there. Lots of guitar parts.
Not sure what I'd use for the part you're interested in.

Sounds to me like a Tweed or similar amp w/ tremolo at first listen, and another guitar track with wah and some delay. Cool song, the production and string arrangement reminds me of Portishead.

That's an electric guitar that is overdrivenized either at the mixing board or/and with a crispy hard-clipping distortion of any kind before the input. There is no amp. Very in line with the early Isaac Hayes feel of this very cool song I'm glad you shared.

That’s just what I hear anyway! I think there are a few ways to get there.

Re: How would achieve this fuzzy sound?
Very cool song, indeed!
I'm with friendship here. This is some kind of clipping. I can achieve very similar sounds with the KORG TNB-1 Tone Booster with maxed gain. That's a pedal that gained lots of popularity among Japanese guitarists in the last few years because of that unique sound. The Yamaha TB-01 is the same pedal and sometimes cheaper. I did a demo here (through tube amp - line out recordings are supplied for download on my website).
