True Blood/ Sookie Stackhouse books - anyone like?

Post by heartben »

I kind of expect a lot of people to dislike the show, and possibly not know about the books the show is based off of.

Anyways, i like the show. i am a few chapters from finishing the 9th book...

i'm not the best conversation starter so if anyone has anything to add, feel free. it was just on my mind and i decided to make a thread about it!

woo!

I love the TV show. Anna Paquin naked= win!

My wife likes both the show and the books. The TV show frustrates her because of the way it meanders around all the books.

Haven’t read the book, like the series.
Naked girls, orgies, naked girls and blood.

Didn’t like the “Queen”, she came across as an old Paris Hilton.
One of the Dallas vampires was hot.

I didn't like the books, but I do like the show. Her writing doesn't do it for me...I'm a die-hard Tom Robbins fan, and Charlaine Harris is just too sparse on the descriptions, metaphors, the artistry for me. The show has a lot more depth and peripheral characters that give the story the context I like. :idk: My hubby likes both.

fair enough. i personally prefer the books but i suppose im not really comparing her to any one else, just the book to the show.

i also didnt like the queen, she has an annoying voice to me, but i agree with the paris hilton ish comment.

does Tom Robbins do anything i may have heard of? any favorites? does he write vampire stories? im just curious. always looking for new stuff. i have a few books lined up but it never hurts to have more!

The tom robbins reference is totally out there. I just prefer that style of writing that goes way out of the way to paint the scene, gets a little absurdly fun. They made one of his books into a movie, Even Cowgirls Get the Blues, but I'd try Still Life With Woodpecker or Skinny Legs and All for a first read. Definitely my favorite author.

My hubby read the entire Stackhouse series, and he always points out when the show diverges from the book. I am fine with it being different, since I don't need to relive an exact play by play of something I've read. Kinda why I'm glad that the Walking Dead series that is in development won't follow the comics too closely.

Anyway, I guess I just felt that the book had a slow pace without the same charms, ex. Lafayette's quips. Hopefully this isn't a spoiler for anyone, but my favorite character bit it in the second season. That character was interesting and never had enough time to get off the ground.

I appreciate the suggestions!

i personally am glad when movies/shows arent the same as the books they are based off of. sometimes things just dont translate to other mediums as well.

and i can see your point about lafayette, he should be one of the main characters of the book instead of how he is.... i could go with less of some characters and more of others but i figure everyone feels that way about certain characters on any show. sometimes you like the main character the least.. who knows?!

i kind of didnt think this thread would get any responses but im glad at least a few people have seen/heard about the show and books.

btw - i just finished whats out of the book series so far. some are better than others. the 4th one is my favorite, the last one ( 9 so far i believe) is among the better ones as well... to me. just saying. if anyone wanted to skip around i think they could.

i was actually on the fence about reading the books - the show was pretty good, but i can only stomach anna paquin when she's either naked, or not speaking.

i guess i'll have to check em out now though.

i actually tried reading twilight. i didn't like it much, to put it nicely.

we were talking about her last night, about how bad her accent is, yet Bill (British) and Jason (Australian) are much more convincing. I can't picture her as anything but that little dancing prat from The Piano.
