A big muff that don't hum..

Post by Blackened Soul »

Like title..

I've owned around 12 Big muff πs, most russians and russian copies and almost all of them have a massive noise floor that hums.. without going to a gated fuzz or using a gate is there anyone out there making one that at last doesn't hum?

Put early in chain. Invest in good cables. Shield your PUs. Get noiseless pickups. Get an extensive EQ to filter our the worst freqs of noise. But muffs are noisy, so unless you wanna go gate or a noise suppression device, idk...

They have four noisy transistor stages slamming each other so I think you’re kind of stuck there.
The elements can get muffish if you set it right, and it is also a bit noisy but quite a bit quieter than a muff.

i have the Wren & Cuff Tall Font Russian, and it’s not particularly noisy compared to my other high-gain fuzzes. you want to hear about noisy? let me tell you about my 2-stage Devi Ever units.

Put early in chain.
this. if you aren't running your fuzz at the front of your chain you're just asking for trouble. you particularly don't want modulation first. yeah, i know, aesthetic choices, but i'm just telling you what's more likely to get a result.

Guitars! we don't need no stinking guitars!

This + a NS cello into SWR Grand Prix preamps [with a lexicon rack unit in fx loop in one side] to a crown power amp.

Power ATM is 2 voodoo lab pp+2s

My chain is overly complicated, basically about half way it splits to stereo to a bass and a guitar side that goes to the looper than 2 different preamps

I am planning on ripping the whole hing apart and rewiring soon.. I am also going to replace the top shelf with wood with hinges so I can get the wiring under control..

I often talk about my love of the the NYC “tone bypass” muff (can’t quite remember which version I have… 6 maybe?) but I like it so much I bought the W&C Eye See Pi version as well - I don’t have that pesky hum with mine and I also play “extended range bass”. I do recall that I did have issues before I switched to a PP2 but never when bypassed.

The W&C is great - I bought it to take to shows instead of the big boi but that’s looking less and less like a consistent reality. I like it more than the Tall Font Russian I had and flipped. Can’t say I’ve had a chance to use it cranked though.

Built in gate to reduce noise? I was scanning the sale page and saw that. May be worth investigating plus it looks hella sick

Yeah, I've been thinking about that [hate the bass demo though.. a review like that makes me not want to even try the thing... demo guys take note.. :poke: ], I might have to use my TYM Mud Fuzz for a muff.. it is gated.. but then I would need to by one of those pink Phatphuk's because I use the boost in the super russian as much as the fuzz  anyway.. I'm going to rip apart my board soon.. I'm going to get a pine board and put hinges on it so I can get to everything easier and get my routing under control

If you want a gate: why not a Jen Jumbo Fuzz. It has a built in gate. I have no idea what it's like tho. Might as well sound like a mk.i hitting a muff

I think the Stone Deaf Fig Fumb has some noise suppressor integrated, but honestly I don't know if it's good or not.
I don't mind about noise because I usually use Muffs as total destruction units, but also put them always first or second in chain and never had huge hums issues. Currently playing the W&C Caprid and it is quieter than my NYC one.
