What kinda drum throne??

Post by Thylacine Dream »

So I've had drums for a while, but since my cheap throne mysteriously disappeared I've been using a swivel chair with no back.

What kinda thrones do y'all like/dislike and why?

I wanna order something kinda nice, but I'm not sure about round vs. moto vs. tractor vs. backrest ???

Well, the industry standard for comfortable drum chair is the Tama 1st chair, and I can confirm that it is super nice. I prefer the "standard" round shape, but that mainly depends on personal preference. Maybe just go to a store and test them out.
Make sure to get something that feels comfortable. Also avoid artificial leather as a seat material, because it will not have any ventilation and you will sweat your ass and balls off. Some nice fabric is better and still durable enough.

The drummer in my band uses a saddle style throne, that's in a kinda sticky fabric - not velvet but... industrial velvet?? :D
I find it really easy to get comfy on and at least for a no-technique-hack like myself, it's easy to get into a spot and stay there, despite uncoordinated flailing. which helps.

Sorry for the derail, but not sorry: Anyone use a drum throne as a seat for guitar or bass? I’ve been thinking about doing that a bit lately, in part because it wouldn’t take up much space.

Nothing takes up less space than a folding chair. But the adjustable height of a drum throne is a big help, especially for using effects pedals. But thrones don’t have back support like a chair does. I see perfectly good folding chairs on the curb pretty regularly, so you can’t beat the price either.

I have the Tama 1st Chair which is very nice. Ordered it new and it wasn't too expensive, like a mid-priced pedal so fuck it. Doesn't come with back rest but that's an accessory you can get later if needed.

Round thrones are fine as long as they're not janky or squeaky (I would like a vintage brown Tama one tho) but I've only tried regular, rather thin ones, not the thick, deluxe kind.

I’ve been using the roc n soc tractor? Original? Style hydraulic throne for years. I’m tall, I like to sit up high when I play, so I got the extended height version. It would also work for guitar playing. You can also get a back rest for it.

So, for drums, it rules. Round vs tractor is a preference thing. Easy up and down is okay but I set my height and forget it so I kinda want the manual spindle one instead of the hydraulic but it’s been wicked reliable. Don’t skimp on one because it truly makes a world of difference. Tama, DW, Pearl, Roc n Soc, whatever meets your height req’s you’ll be set I’m sure. And seated for sure.
