Speaker Suggestion for Hiwatt SE4122 cab

Post by JTurbide »

Yo I just bought an unloaded 70s hiwatt 4x12.
I wanted to get some Reeves vintage purple or Weber Thames but shipping cost are fucking insane.

I found a Canadian eminence and celestion dealer who ships for free. Also I know a store not far from me who should have some WGS.

So, looking at pricing I'm really considering Eminence or WGS. I'm usually more of an "american tone" guy so Eminence Canabis rex could be cool but since the cab is a vintahe hiwatt I feel responsible for putting at the very least some british inspired speakers in it

So here are my options: Eminence Wizard or Eminence Tonker, those have a description that seems to match what I like. Also WGS Reaper, Invader, ET90...

I mostly play clean but sometimes go into riffing territory. Will play with an SMS CTP for cleans and Hilbish beta preamp for riffs. I mostly try to play kinda fusion rythm stuff. For example I really dig Miles Davis 70s stuff, the canterbury scene (Nucleus, soft machine), Chris Potter, Guru Guru... But also cleaner sounding stuff like the Grateful dead or heavy shit like Causa Sui or Space Debris

the Wizard is a cool speaker, but it's very efficient (LOUD) and it has that sort of crispy top end that i hear in most of the Patriot/Redcoat Eminence speakers. if you want a very in-your-face speaker, it's a good choice.

the Reaper (i'm familiar with the HP version) is a bit mellower, but has a really great sound & doesn't have that fatiguing quality the newer Eminence speakers have (IMO, of course). the WGS Retro 30 is also another nice option from them. (the best sounding cab i own has a mix of Reaper HP & Retro 30's so i'm biased.)

Om now I'm really considering a mix of reaper hp, retro or ET90... Will cost at least $150 more shipped than 4 wizards or 4 tonkers thought..

Edit: yeah WGS would be about $850 CAD and Eminence about $620 CAD ... Fuck me

I went with 2 Wiz and 2 Gov. Figured they might pair well with each other and as much as I wanted to try the to pair ET90 with ReaperHP or Retro I just could not justify the added $220. Hopefully I'll like this combination :)
