i'm splitting my current rack into two: one for reverbs which all have 1/4" outputs only, and one for signal processors which all have 1/4"/XLR connections. i'm interested to know about:
1. is there a digital delay/etc. that's more on the dark, grungy analog side that the super-cleans. ideally i'd get a pre-Cambrian analog unit, but they're rare and pricey as hell. what i have now: Yamaha GEP-50 with a SPX-90 in the effects loop which allows me to run a reverb patch and an Early Reflections patch simultaneously, and an Alesis MidiVerb 2. i'm watching several of the Lexicon 500s for uber-clean and enormous. i'd like something grittier than the MidiVerb if possible.
2. what do i need for home-studio kind of signal processing? that group includes a Rane stereo compressor/limiter and a Rane SP15 parametric EQ. i'll get a second EQ so i can run a stereo signal. i'm looking at adding two Yamaha 1/3-octave graphic EQs. what else do i need? is the Aphex Aural Exciter any cop at all? any/all suggestions welcome. stereo FX preferred. i mostly play psychedelic and shoegaze-inspired stuff, not to mention psychedelic shoegaze, which i like to call My Bloody Crazy Tuna Dive.
recommend me some old rack-mount units

Re: recommend me some old rack-mount units
There is a rack thread with some good recommendations. I think those alesis compressors and gates that cost nothing are supposed to be really cool with some character. Kevin used alot of ridiculous compression and ducking to get that phil spector sound; he would run guitars and drums into one compressor to get some tremolo:ish thing going.
Old ibanez delays are supposed to be the shit, i think they still arent that overpriced. As I have understood the aural exciter things are just some weird phase filtering with companding or something. I would rather just boost highs on a shitty eq
