Recommend me some body shapes

Post by VREEEEVROOOOOW »

Which body shapes let me use my thumb all the way down to the 20th fret or so? I use a flying V and don't know any other bodies that are as favourable to my style of playing...

The Moderne is still a V, right? Like, it's not a V, but it also is.

With all the weird stuff that Eastwood makes there's gotta be something they've done that works.

Looking at pics of the pink strat and the moderne, I have no idea how I would e.g. manage to get my thumb on the 20th fret bass, and whatever finger on the 20th high e.

I'm talking about this level of access:

But maybe I'm underestimating those suggestions—I haven't had them in my hands.

Most of the metal-dude-super-strat stuff is really ergonomic.

Les Paul Junior Doublecut and SG have a similar neckheel. Also the Firebird and the Explorer.
All the Rickenbackers, too.
What style do you want? Modern or old?

Jackson kelly?

Looks like it has perfect thumb access up to fret 20 and maybe doable slightly beyond that. It's also pointy af

Steinbergers and similar sorts of shapes have good access (it's a shame they look awful  )

Thanks for the suggestions thus far

I like guitars that look like what they are—a plank. I.e. I like natural finishes. I'm not picky on shapes, beyond ergonomic issues. Or... I guess I'm picky. But I don't have a set of criteria I pick from. I just (dis)like how some stuff looks. -_o_-

Easy 20th fret thumb access? The "Ugliest Gear" thread to the rescue!

As for the guitar [barf] I used to blame that shit on Mike Bloomfield, but now I've realized that people are dumbasses.

The PRS SE Soapbar II is pretty much a plank, comes in natural finishes and has a good upper fret access.
Most of these japanese neck through guitars from the 70s and 80s fit your criteria. Like this:

...but they are heavy as fuck.

Oh, yeah, I should probably add that I hate heavy guitars. My favourite wood in terms of weight, feel, and (perhaps most importantly) sound, that I've played is korina.

I think my dream guitar is probably something like... a semi-hollow korina in a V-ish shape with bigbsy (with an elongated arm), a quiet lipstick-like pickup and a low output flat response humbucker, pickup blend knobs, and a natural finish. (As for necks, I think that I haven't played enough to have an informed opinion. I like the '58 D profile and pau ferro, but I'd like it if it were just a tiny bit thinner than on my V.)

Wellll you could get creative and get a dean acoustic V and a V bigsby kit and mod your own horrible monster..

This is what I mean with metal dude super strat stuff. Never played one, but that would have to balance pretty well and have good reachability.
Solar Guitars Type A.

Finding one with a Bigsby will be... challenging. But natural finish sure.
