Impulse Response vs. DAW

Post by CBA »

Hi ILF.

I just noticed today that everyone is saying "IR" and I didn't know what that meant. I still don't, but I kinda get what kinda shit we're talking about here.

I live in a box and can therefore never ever ever play guitar loud, or, I should say I can't even play guitar at any volume. So it bums me out that I can't record actual real guitar amp sounds, because my amp is really good. It's a Fender Deluxe Tweed USA that I've had forever and it's just right. Anyway, I was looking into some IR/preamp/amp-in-a-box pedals (sparked by the newly released Strymon Iridium) and it got my thinking about whether any of these pedals/solutions are meant to be any better than what I can get right out of the box with Logic Pro X, which I've been using for years. Logic amp sims are pretty good I'd say, but if the technology has come along over the last few years, and something like the Iridium would be a better sounding bet, I might look into IR pedals... harder.

So basically:

Are IRs/amp sims in pedal format going to be any better than the shit I can already do in Logic?

Thanks!

:excellent:

That’s a tough question to answer.

Are they going to sound 100x better? Prob not.

Is logic using IR? They could be.

Honestly if you’re using the logic cab sims, anything you add will be marginally better or worse.

If you get a fender tweed deluxe ir, It will sound like the amp they pulled the ir from not necessarily your amp, in your room with the mic you like.

Space Designer within logic can create custom IRs. You can use plug-ins to do IR.

I have always used free VST/AU programs to do speaker simulation/IR.

You already have the DAW, so try tweaking it and see if you can get a satisfying result. For some people it will probably nail the sound they're looking for, but for others it might be lacking.

logic has an IR plugin. It is probably gonna be better sounding than any pedal you get. You gotta have nice IRs tho

The benefit of using IRs in your DAW is that you can always get more IRs if you don't like the ones available to you. With something like Iridium, you have the IR in the box and that's it (which might be more than enough if you like the sounds). So I'd say if you're bored of the IRs you have in Logic, or just curious what else is out there, see about downloading some new ones.

The pedal stuff might sound great, I haven't tried any of it. But because of the freedom and tweak potential in your DAW you'll be able to get at least as good if not better results for A LOT LESS money, possibly free. :idk:

I think the choice is about the workflow you want. Pedal is simple and probably sounds nice because someone has done that tweaking. But if I were you I'd try a bit more in Logic first

Thanks all.

It's not so much that I really wanna use IRs or something, it's just that I wonder if the technology itself, and thus MAYBE the sounds, have improved over the last few years and that the modeler pedals are maybe surpassing in-the-box DAW (specifically Logic) stuff. I'm not into it enough to make my own IR, and even want to avoid that if I can. But I think for the time being yeah I'll stick with Logic and what it can do (though of course no substitute for my really good amp). Perhaps in a few years there will be some shit that ACTUALLY REALLY is the bitch's tits and I'll pick it up. Until then, the pedal versions will at least be fun to try if I get a chance.

Thanks again!
