the reason ILF is the way it is
those of us who've been around these parts for a good while now have known it for ever, the newer ones among us have called it too.
ILF is one of the few boards I've been on where the community is self-policing, self-respecting and holds itself to a certain standard without any sort of douchebaggery.
blend said in another thread that everyone seems to trust each other and genuinely like each other as friends.
we all hold this to be self evident, whenever anything happens that isn't cool it gets sorted out rather quickly, and I don't think there's ever been a real banning here lol
I think the reason is simple.
the things that originally draw people to this forum are effects pedals, and not your typical Boss stuff. you aint gonna find anyone here content to have a rig consisting of guitar->tuner->TS9->DS1->amp.
we are generally the outcasts that people give shoddy looks to, we're the ones that get talked down to and accused of taking ourselves too seriously, we get asked the stupid questions
"who needs that many pedals?" "why so many fuzzes?" "why so many amps for 1 guitar?" "bass should always be clean" "you have a drummer AND a drum machine?" "you dont need that many delays" "are you really splitting your signal then running it back into itself? why?" "whats with all that noise?"
most of us were originally drawn to these things because of what they do and how they do it
after hanging around these parts and reading these threads for the better part of 2 years now I've realized that most of us had a crappy time growing up and alot of us are still trying to come into ourselves, and this isn't a coincidence IMO.
we're kind and caring, and genuinely worry about each other because we all realize it's the way we should all have been treated throughout life. it's the way all people should be towards each other.
obviously it's not always the case, so when we meet others who like ourselves have found this fuzz covered gem, this shoegaze and noise filled room, this acceptance of others regardless of race, religion, sexual preference.......hell anything really, we can't help but love em.
we are the way we are because by society not accepting us we've taken the things that society generally considers proper, positive personality traits and evolved them to an extent that we don't even have to meet the person face to face to care about them.

i love you HT
i agree, whole heartedly.
i'm a tone nerd. I get pissed if my amp is on 3 and not 4, it has to be perfect.
i know you're all the same way. it's what puts us a cut above the rest.
and i do sadly giggle to myself when i see an all boss board, but you gotta remember, they did sort of set the standard, it's just a shame that nobody ventures out of the box... except us!

Ha! I'm nothing like that.

My tone is as bad as my talent. My rig is scratchy and wonky and buggy. No one would ever describe me as a cut above anything. But I still like ya, Wizard. Ya big huggable pile o fuzz.
I'm here for the naked ladies and free beer.

Re: the reason ILF is the way it is
I'm pretty pumped that my inspired comment inspired this comment lol. Everything you said seems pretty true, and that's why this place is awesome.
In fact... I would say that it's safe to assume that when Mr. Webster was scribing his great collective of the English language, just as he reached the end of the A section, he was suddenly taken into a dream-like state, in which he found an avatar-laden robin's egg blue world of peace, joy, prosperity, wisdom and infinite benevolence. He was stricken bewildered... "This... by what means does one find such splendor? Curious being abounding, a pleasance unknown elsewhere... this... THIS IS...!". Enter reality, grabbing hold of his mind swiftly and setting him gently back to his work. He then took hold of the dipped quill, and proceeded to graph an A... W... E...
That's right...
But seriously, there's probably never going to be another place like this, at least not anywhere in any realm of music... probably not anywhere else, either. God Save the Fuzz!

Dude, a ball pit is not... weren't you ever a little kid? Ya know, a ball pit, with the plastic balls and you'd jump in it... it's not a gay bar!

*gets naked*
WOOoooooooo!
No, but srsly. I often wonder why ILF is the way it is, then I think it's better not to question it. I onno. I'd say HT hit on some good points though, FWIW. I personally hate punk and punky type music for example, but feel connected somehow (in views?) with people on this forum that enjoy it...I want to say it's the siren song of teh fuzz...but really?
Maybe, just maybe, the love for Devi's fuzzes is what brought us together. Like, haha cliche I know, but her stuff was always about breaking boundaries and fucking the haters. Maybe people who enjoy these activities (stereotypically) have a lot in common when it comes to personalities and views.
This forum would make for an excellent sociological study, methinks haha.

Re: the reason ILF is the way it is
Some random guy in my building stopped by and saw my Telecaster and asked to play it. He turned on some of my pedals and attempted to play guitar. He chuckled and said "dude, you need a noise gate." I then pointed out the oscillation switch on the white spider, chaos switch on the rocket, and the noise knob on the nofi.... and said "the noise is half the fun."

Re: the reason ILF is the way it is
real talk? this is the only forum that i have not gotten banned on this bad-vibey year. it is LITERALLY the only one i can post on. people don't jump on you if you have divergent opinions or you are a n00b. there is no n00b hazing. there is no authoritarian, didactic, holier-than-thou sanctimonious brow-beating: it is a great place for learning, sharing, filtering, discoursing, debating & informing. props goes to tolerant, open-minded ILF posters.
also people that post on I Love Fuzz are sexxxy.

Re: the reason ILF is the way it is
This is definitely the only forum I've ever been on that I felt comfortable posting right from
the word go; I'd always had to temper what I'd said before until I work out how people are
going to react.
As for the being outcasts bit, I somewhat agree. I don't consider myself an outcast, just
someone who isn't just going to do the sheeple thing and agree just to fit in. That's how
I'm like in real life too, my friends are all such a mish-mash of different personalities all
brought together by one common ground; love of music.
It's amazing we all get along so well, but it works.
Long live ILF!
