What are some of the fuzzes you consider the most badass

Post by pigmaker »

it's a thread about fuzz :poke:

I learned something a few years ago.
Fuzzes and boosts are really the only pedals that I use.
At one time, I had a bunch of envelope filters, phasers, choruses, flangers, reverbs, delays, etc and I never used them for laying down guitar tracks.
All I ended up using was fuzzes and boosts.

I now have a working list of fuzzes and boosts that I am after.
What sets these apart are, they are special. To my ear.
I've been trying to think of a better way to describe them, but special is the best way I can describe it.
Maybe if you look at my list, you can get an idea of what I mean.
When I hear a fuzz, sometimes there's something about it that's not only unique, but it has a certain presence.
basic audio super fuzz
basic audio foxey lady
jext telez black drone wasp
jext telez canyon climber
eqd tone reaper
park blue mkiii
rogue sound hatchet harry (zonk machine ii)
missing from the list is a muff clone. lots to choose from. let's hear your suggestions.

also i am looking for a suggestion on a tone bender mki that you think would fit these parameters. unique enough, has presence, in general just badass.

and what fuzzes do you consider to be unique and killer? a cut above?

I loooooved my Verellen Big Spider (Ace Tone FM-2). Super fuckin' gnarly.
That and the Team Awesome Fuzz Machine are my two favorites. I wish I hadn't sold them, even though there was no choice then.

Basic Audio Marq Won
Fairfield Unpleasant Surprise
SS/BS Buzzz
SS/BS TAFM
Zvex FF

The Blackout Fubar might be the most feral fuzz I’ve used.

I just got it so I haven't used it much but I got a Manlay Ronno Bender that's a MkI style Bender.

It's a Spanish guy obsessed with Mick Ronson, all the pedals I've noticed so far are built around him (Tone Bender, Axis fuzz, a Marshall Major pedal).

I can vouch for the BA Marq Won. I was playing mine for hours today. It’s a MKI with 3 voicings on a toggle, gobs of character.
The BA Fuzz Mutant is super special too - a desert island fuzz for me bc of its very unique voice and crumble.

I think your list is missing two food groups as well: a bosstone and a harmonic percolator. Some real character in those circuits.

I don't know any of the fuzzes in the first post, so maybe I don't understand the question, but a couple of great fuzzes which don't get a lot of mentions here:

Zvex Octane III - great for heavy sounds, with octave on or off. Burly!
Noise Ensemble - I think this started as a DIY circuit, and a company (Gojira) also builds them. Syrupy!
Death By Audio 'Absolute Destruction' - narrow range (IMO) of usable settings, and can easily sound like hot garbage on guitar and bass, but awesome destroyer of synth tones/useful recording tool for me.

Maybe my post belongs in the "10 Fuzzes" thread...

Cross-post from "Help me find my perfect fuzz thread" so I beg your pardon:

Best Tonebender=Faceless FX
Best Muff (so far)=Wren and Cuff De La Riva (I mean, every Muff is in there plus more)
Best Fuzzrite=Monsterpiece Fuzzrite
Best Bosstone=Monsterpiece Angry Dick 2000 and Land Devices "No Masters"
Best Fuzzface=Analogman NKT Red Dot w/bias or Monsterpiece PNP DLX (personally, I prefer the Monsterpiece a bit more and it's half the price)
Best Foxxtone=Faceless FX (I think he only made 5 but could be persuaded I imagine)
Best Buzzaround=Ghost Effects and Monsterpiece (Super Electric is also very close)
Best Dizzy Tone=Super Electric, Ghost Effects and Monsterpiece
Amazing, all-around mini fuzz=Red Witch Fuzz God III
Los Mutantes=Basic Audio Fuzz Mutant
Best new build=Spiral Electric Black Spiral (uses Nanolog tech and is super fabulous and records beautifully)
Great all-rounder=Magnetic Effects White Atom. There's a lot in that box and can even go down to overdrive. Very versatile.
Best "blowing up amp/trombone sounds"=Paul Trombetta mini Bone, Bone Machine, Feederbone, etc. A cheaper option is the J.Rockett Hooligan or even better the Mojo Hand FX El Guapo.
Best octave down and up and in between (and a fine distortion on it's own)=Drolo Giant Hogweed
Super great, unique builds not necessarily clones=Shoe Pedals (I love everything they do pretty much)

Those are just a few off the top of my head.

Dunno if you were talking about my list or the OP's, but I like both of those. I just let go of my only Percolator (Zander Cafetiere), because I felt I could get similar results using other pieces. Somewhere around here I have one or two DIY Bosstones, and although I enjoy it---warm with relatively smooth grit---it wouldn't make my personal top-5. It certainly has its strengths though. :thumb:
