Current Production Resonator?

Post by JereFuzz »

Hi,

What is a good current production resonator guitar? I’ve read great reviews of the Gretsch Bobtail:

Anyone have experience with resonators that you’d recommend? I’m looking to take a plunge relatively soon.

those are supposed to be quite good for the price. i had a squareneck Regal for awhile i got for like $200 used that i liked a lot, but a used dobro is always something of a shot in the dark. if i was speculating i'd guess the Gretsch dobros are pretty good; they seem to be pretty solid in the inexpensive acoustic instruments department, and have a adorable little 0-sized acoustic that i want like crazy even though i really have no use for it.

One major warning with any "inexpensive" resonator is that a lot of the cheaper ones aren't set up properly. Specifically, the biscuit (bridge) of my Epiphone Biscuit Resonator was screwed into the cone, which it absolutely should not be attached at all. It should be free to move and resonate. Apparently this is a pretty common problem with a lot of resonators that are made overseas

I know a guy in NC who makes them as reso-dude. I can vouch for his work even though I've never played one of his resonators, or any resonator for that matter

No interest in Resos? One may be nice to have in case guitar interest wanes or you need a new sound.

Oh shit, I love playing it and already want another one. :( Eyeballing a Epiphone Dobro.

I was eyeing one of those Gretsch resos when I was originally looking for a resonator. Glad you're enjoying it!

I almost sold my Epiphone Biscuit awhile ago. I still don't play it too much, but I'm happy I didn't end up selling it.

I've been following this company for awhile: https://www.muleresophonic.com/
I'd love to get my hands on one of them for sure

Picked up a Gretsch Boxcar used for $200. It is a tier lower than the Alligator. The sound is nice but not as raucous as the Alligator. Sounds like a nice steel string acoustic with some metal reverb thrown in. Nice for finger style.
