Favorite preamp / EQ pedals?

Post by TheStevenLasombras »

I might finally need that extra bit of "tone shaping" control... Thinking about EQD Tone Job, Benson Preamp (though all the demos make it seem like more of a drive, which I don't really need), maybe just the basic Boss EQ.

Any EQ / preamp recommendations (that can be had for under <$250)?

I use a EP Booster-klone after my Rat(only dirt on the board).
Pretty basic, but it makes everything sound better and beefier. Never turn it off.

Are you thinking end or beginning of your chain?

I have been using this one for about a year and I like it a lot. You can save 4 different presets which is useful if you use different amps sometimes or in my case, play in multiple bands. Although, I use mine at the end of my effects loop, not sure how well it works in front of an amp.

I also use this before my amp but after my dirt pedals to add a switchable tone shift. Sounds pretty tight but it is not 100% clean.

The Empress ParaEQ is the best EQ I've used. For serious tone shaping that would be ideal.

Parametrics are the best, sweeping the frequency is key to good toneshaping. cant go wrong with the ol boss/mxr if you want a cheap eq option though

The VFE Rocket is great for this sort of thing, if you can find one.

Says the preorder window is already closed but maybe you can sneak an order in for a rocket.

The MXR 6 band EQ I own since probably 12years is still the eq/boost with the best price/sound ratio to me.
Actually I use it for volume boost, but if you don't need extreme eq settings it does his job.

Left field suggestion: DOD Boneshaker is plentiful at $40 or so. Bass/mid/treble with an adjustable frequency for each. I have a guitar and an amp that weren't getting along, and the Boneshaker is like a really skilled couples counselor.

I bought mine at the blowout price, didn't really find a need for it on my board, but came back to it recently and found it awesome as a one pedal boost/EQ for low output single coils. Cheap enough you can try it and still get a proper EQ else without blowing your budget.

i use a Skreddy Dynamic Mids Enhancer for a first-in-the-chain preamp. it's a bit limited in that it has a three band EQ that's just focused on midrange frequencies, but it sounds great.

Preamp: Amdek DMK, Tetanus booster

Pure EQ: Any. They all good. I have an old huge DOD that's cool.

Koma FL-201 is cool too.

Alternative: Change harmonic content of wave with balanced modulation and a tracking oscillator (like a parallel wave guide).
