People who use mini pedals: why?

I can not get into these but they are still everywhere. They always tip over or get pushed around, and any space that would be saved from the smaller size is eaten up by the sidejacks and power supply.

I don't like how a regular cable affects the placement so much, or that you have to velcro them down hard to keep them level and sturdy. All I do like about them is the look, it can be cool in the right setting, and a lot of little boost pedals have been made to look really nice, because they're boost pedals. I want the Mooer Radar because there's nothing else like it, and it will be a crazy useful studio/desktop pedal that I'll use all the time. I think all their little mini sansamps and reverbs/delays etc. are cool for that sort of use, and naturally more of a pain in the ass on a pedalboard.

For something like a RAT, where personally I'm typically leaving it on all the time with one setting, I wouldn't mind having a mini pedal. Especially because even if every Rat or clone I've had is top jack, it's still pretty wide or awkwardly sized. So having side jacks and the power jack take up a little extra space width wise, doesn't completely counter the space saving aspects of the mini format. Something that is "set and forget" like a boost or simple overdrive, that I'm turning off and on, I guess it would depend how stable it is on my board.

For something more fiddly or that is already pretty compact sized and/or top jack, might not be worth it for me. I don't think I'd want a lot of mini pedal in a row on my board, if I were planning on turning things off and on frequently.

I dunno why they haven't made them horizontal (like zvex) with minipots sticking out away from you (where topmount jacks go), footswitch on top, jacks on the side, maybe the 9v under the mini pots. That's a mini format I can work with, not just Honey I Shrunk The MXR

I used to have a few Pigtronix pedals like that (not the top edge knobs, but otherwise) and they were great sounding pedals, but they were really awkward. Both jacks were on one side though, so if I turned them side ways they were top jacks, which was...kind of cool. They were all really fiddly, tweaky pedals though, so it was always weird to bend down, turn my head and adjust the settings. I used them for recording a lot, not as part of a pedalboard, then eventually just got rid of them.

Yeah, a regular box with top mount jacks is the same footprint as a mini with side jacks, but then all your pedals have to be top mount or you don't have the same space available...

I only have one mini pedal, and it was the only way I was able to purchase a pedal I wanted, so I went for it.

I still think it's funny Barber thinks the big box is normal and the MXR enclosure is "mini".

Having one of those little fellas on your board when you're tight on cash and board space could make sense I guess, but imo only for 'always on' type of effects, and with fixed settings.
But yeah, even than, there's always an equally good normal sized alternative with top jacks, so...

At one point on my bass pedalboard I had a mix of pedals that were top jack, side jack, two jacks on one end, some weirder random stuff like two jacks on one side and one with 2 jacks on one narrow end really close together and knobs on the other end (fdeck HPF PRE) and it was a fucking nightmare with patch cables. I had a mix of all different kinds and lengths of patch cables to make everything reach and fit and I couldn't get everything in the orientation that was most logical for me using it and still fit right. It would be convenient if everything was MXR sized and top jacks, but there's some cool pedals you just can't get in that format.

I think if you can fuck mini pedals, you probably need to find a smaller form factor

I also really dislike mini pedals. If a pedal is too small, I avoid trying it even if it sounds good.

On the other end of the spectrum is my Dunwich Wizard Fuzz. Which is actually taller than my PT Mini...
