D*A*M Ezekiel conundrum

Post by jazznrick »

So I love my Zeke. Have never loved a pedal more. But the tub is I don’t want to have to change between diodes then change all the knobs to switch. So rather than buying a second Ezekiel I’d like a pedal that can do the Zeke’s silicon diode sound. I’d like it to cost less than half($200) of the Ezekiel. Thanks so much for your help!!

Yeah, too many good sounds in the Zeke, it’s a problem!

I’ve never played a real Ezekiel but bought a clone that I think is great off a dude who builds pedals under the name TX FX, he sells on Reverb and works/has worked with ILF user dminner on some builds. Maybe try that route? The clone I bought was definitely sub-$100.
Good deals on ILF: too many to list, just ask!

For how much DAM stuff is worth you could probably sell the original and get someone to custom-build you a two-channel version.

Like Whoismarykelly said..

There are not many parts in that one, someone could build you two in a 1590BB with two separate controls and clipping options. Like a King of Tone V4.. maybe use different opamp too just for posterity...

After looking into it a little more, I'd definitely put this in an XX short and fat ways, two stomps, full controls for both sides, 1P6T rotary for each with various LED pairs and asymmetrical stuff, schotkys, Ge.. etc. And then maybe implement a split and blend between the two sides so you can really take it up a notch. And I would try a 4558 in one and a 1458 in one and see if there was any difference.. (I just got 10 lm1458s..) Yeah. That sounds like a pretty badass dirtbox..

Wow, thanks for the great replies!!!
I think I’m a smidge afraid a Clone won’t be as good as the real deal. I had a HagenFX Clone before I bought my real one and they were definitely different. Anyone have experience with playing a Clone as good as the original?

Of course its going to be different but you would be gaining a great deal of functionality with two settings and Im sure with a bit of adjustment you would be happy. But if you think you'll always have doubts then just shell out for a second real one.

I have a Danny W and an Original. The original one sounds definitely better.

I wonder if the schematic online is 100% correct, and/or if he used the same "mojo" parts or just run of the mill.

I somehow sourced the “original” layout and the build I made Sonny was a gift. Uni’s was the layout from the tag board site. I didn’t source mojo components other than large voltage caps for shits and giggles. Just standard quality components. I used DAM’s IC in Sonny’s, but most opamps I tried yielded nothing different I could personally hear. I have never played an original, but that specific one on Reverb - and I think there’s one on eBay under “Sugarfoot Electronics” - is at least truer to the original. :idk:

I guess that would be the same for any builder, so if being as true to the original as possible is what you need your best bet would be getting another DAM unit.

Hey! Yea it would be a tossup for anyone building one really, that isn't David or his friend that actually designed it. There are a lot of variables (as you know) that can effect the end result. I was simply curious.
