Budget phone audio, or how to be a big instagram pedal star

Post by baremountain »

The other day I had a sick patch going, so I decided to take a video and share it on Instagram. I quickly captured a great clip of it, only to realize upon reviewing that my roommate was in the shower in my room, and there was a big blanket of white noise that I didn't notice while monitoring through my headphones. I ended up making changes to the patch and never posted or rerecorded because such is life, but it made me think to ask y'all - how do folks get nice quality audio on their instagram videos?

One method I've heard, which sounds like a pain, tbh, is recording video and audio, including some kind of a/v cue, and then editing the two together in post-prod, then posting. My thought is there's gotta be some kind of cheap line in available for iPhones that can replace phone audio? Mine is an oldie with a headphone jack if that changes anything. I'd love to find a solution for less than, say, $50, because I normally talk myself out of posting content these days due to my distaste for the sound quality.

solo tunes:
completed works || loosey goosey releases
associated acts:
Raab Zamboni (fake jazz/real noise//sax, modular synth, editing, misc) || Field Guide (my best friends//sax on 2 tracks)

I make t-shirts, patches, koozies, buttons, CDs, sometimes tapes, and eventually i'll start working on pedals again. DM me for pricing!

I have an Android and use a Roland Go:Mixer. Works perfectly for my purposes. Doesn't help iphone users but thought I'd share for anyone looking and has an android.

How often do instagram clips get played through anything better than a phone speaker though?

There are mics made for lightning adapters. Run $60-100. I don’t use one, but they seem cool.
The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents.

Darcy (I think) got an iStomp awhile ago and that seemed really cool. I looked into it a little and seems like it would work for this as well as allowing you to use iPad/iPhone apps with pedals, etc.

The phone mics just don't work that great IMO. I have a Shure mic for my iPhone and it work fine unless I'm using some heavy fuzz, then it loses all character even though live it does not. I think the best way is to use a real mic then adapt it over, which is WAY too much fucking effort. Fuck Instagram. :)

Yeah this is very true. I often browse at work with nice cans on but I'm certainly the exception rather than the rule. I'll look into the iRig though! Thanks y'all :)*

These work for iPhone as well, I have one and for what it is, it is great. Certainly doesn't match the quality of a proper recording into a DAW, but it does wonders for quick insta-clips. I've seen a few used for $40 or $50.
