Danelectro Fab Tone is the best dirt pedal ever made
Discuss.
If you'd like.
I'm right regardless of the discussion.
Go see MONO or Mogwai live. They will kill you. They will play something soft and pretty and trance-inducing. Then they will hit that Fab Tone and *murder you*.
If I had to have only one dirt pedal, it would be the Fab Tone.
If I could only have one pedal *altogether*, it would probably be the Fab Tone (if the amp had any kind of built-in reverb).
If you don't have a Fab Tone, what are you even doing with your guitar? Just go buy a harp or lute or something.
What are you gonna do, buy a BOSS distortion pedal? Don't be ridiculous. Get a Fab Tone.
And I'll have none of that crybaby stuff about how "but the knobs aren't linear!" and "the distortion control is useless above 9 o'clock, it's just noise!" or how "not only are the tone knobs not linear, but whatever the hell they are doing doesn't even correspond!"
Just put the tone knobs at max and the volume at somewhere between 9 and 12 o'clock, depending on how much you value the health of the biosphere. (I haven't tried anything above 12, because when I got that high, I started seeing a bright light, and I saw my great grandfather, but his face was missing—it was kinda creepy.)
CERN should get rid of the LHC and just study the Fab Tone instead.

I bought one when they came out (and weren't particularly cheap) in '96 or so.
It bumped the old HM-2 out of my rig at the time - served me well for a long, long time. Still have it as a backup - for some things it's amazing.
I'm just back to using the HM-2 for that type of sound again (at non-Swedish chainsaw settings).

This feels like some kind of mash up of that old Kramer ad copy and Real Ultimate Power. Maybe a dash of Rip Glitter.

Wow, I totally forgot about Real Ultimate Power. Blast from the past. Now I’m ready to get super pumped up again!

I got one literally for free, and I trimmed out the diode clipping so the gain knob actually has a useful range now.. I've tried just about every mod for it.. It's just OK. I mean I'm not going to get rid of it.. still has the battery lid..

The Fab Tone was my first pedal (also around 96-97) and it was about 80 bucks I think? It cost me a pretty penny for the young age I was. I loved it to death. I had that stupid thing until I was like 27, then got rid of it. It's a classic for sure.

Yea, was under a hundred but over 60 I remember. At the same time, I wasn't waiting on it to go on sale or get discontinued. Was a very strange time in gear and stuff just came and went hardcore as the business transitioned a bit.

The Fab Tone's distortion knob begins about five buzzsaws after where the distortion knob on other pedals end.

I used one for a doorstop for a long time. I would put it in my parents annual garage sale for $5 every year and it would never sell. At 0% gain it sounds like 5 Metal Zones on 10.

You have to cut out the diode clipping man. And then there's a cap mod that adds mids and it sounds huge AF.

I can’t imagine it sounding much more massive than it already does.BetterOffShred wrote:You have to cut out the diode clipping man. And then there's a cap mod that adds mids and it sounds huge AF.
I still don’t know why some mooer Donner etc isn’t making a micro sized copy.
And it’s really might be the best dirt pedal ever, def top three. Fabtone, SAS, and RM-1n are my desert island.

I too got one for free. Modded it early on, and gave it to a friend who had no pedals...wish I had held onto it at this point.
