The what order should I put these in Thread
So I have four drive pedals I love and what to run togethor if possible. Those pedals are:
-dirge Harmonic Percolator clone
-BYOC op amp muff clone
-dunlop minifuzz face silicon version
-boss waza craft super overdrive
Ideally i want to have handleing a lower gian sound and two for higher gain, (clear low gain, messy low gain, high clear gain, high messy gain) going for maximum versitility. I wanna be able to go from sludgy to clear whenever i feel like.
Let me know what combos would be good for this. If that includes taking out pedals from the equation thats cool too.
Amp im using is a vintage 50 watt marshall head.
Hut me with them ideas yo.

Endless combinations with a Boss ES-5/8 is what I would do. Or that matrix thingy for ILF points.

Fuzzface is a mystery to me as I've never had one. For the others, I'd go HP > Boss > Muff. That's my dirt section right now (swap Boss for a rat but I think they're probably pretty similar).

I also think HP->Boss->Muff. I can never vibe with fuzz faces outside of TAFM... I don't want to be a dick but my first thought was "HP->Boss->Muff and throw away the fuzz face."

Your not a dick.
As much as i love that sound, that pedla has always been the problem child when I try to get it to work for my rig.
So we seem to be set on HP>boss>muff. New question: what would you guys keep the settings at?

Re: The what order should I put these in Thread
There are some fuzz face variants/clones that play nicer with other pedals, but that one is more of a reissue style design, so it has a relatively low input impedance compared and high output impedance. Which is ok if you're running it by itself, but not great with other pedals. So the Fuzz Face is probably the wild card. In generally I like overdrive before fuzz, because then I can do a slightly gritty clean, straight fuzz or boosted fuzz easily. Especially if it's a Muff style fuzz. I've never had or played a Harmonic Percolator. I'd probably go Boss > HP > Muff and try the fuzz face out in different locations to see how it affects and interacts with things.

My limited experience with Percolators is that they push other pedals like a fucking dream.
I'd go HP->Boss->Muff. I'd probably keep the boss at low gain, the percolator at the highest gain you can without it getting too fuzzy. Diode lift helps. Keep that attack and clank. Then set the muff big but not treble heavy.
I'd probably keep the boss on most of the time and stack everything around it. Then you have boss for clear low gain, switch to just the perc for kinda messy low-ish gain, perc into boss for more aggressive medium gain, muff by itself for smoother fuzz, boss into muff for a little push, perc into muff for aggressive cutting fuzz, and all three for the end of days

I would assume fuzzface out front of all that so it can still just do its own thing.

I think this is why most people with Fuzz Faces put them first in the pedal chain. It works for me, although I don't stack them with other dirt.Corey Y wrote:There are some fuzz face variants/clones that play nicer with other pedals, but that one is more of a reissue style design, so it has a relatively low input impedance compared and high output impedance.

For grit, I tend to put the tone I want to hear the most at the end. I think this is a good thing to keep in mind if you're gonna have several on at once. Other than that, just spend a few days moving stuff around and figuring out what's cool.
Try to have different sounds. I have three dirt pedals (not including the overdrive), and I have at least 5 easily distinguishable sounds, and a couple more for nuance.
Another thing to consider is noise. If you're gonna have multiple dirt pedals on at once, high-gain first generally means noise rock/shoegaze/whatever, whereas if you put it last, you could dial it back and play ehhh idk, like, "rock", I guess?

Re: The what order should I put these in Thread
As others have said, I'd stick the fuzz face first in chain, since it's the most sensitive to the input from your guitar and your volume knob position. I never liked its high-gain sounds (too wooly), but it's not bad as a low-gain fuzz. That said, I still sold mine as I wanted something raspier.
You should definitely put the BOSS before the BYOC op amp muff, as an SD1 pushing a muff is a really glorious sound! I don't think the SD1 sounds great as your base or always-on dirt tone, since it's so mid-boosted. It sounds best when it's pushing things (be it amps or other dirt pedals). You don't even need to set the gain or volume that high on the SD1, because it's really the SD1's EQ-shape that blends so well with the muff.
