like. BYOB, GGG and Behringer xD; I don't care what anyone says about the "original" circuit they all sound the fucking same and mods don't help. You can polish a turd and all you get is a shiny turd.

I stg if someone made a ds1 and called it a rat clone with a big muff tonestack people would go apeshit over it

I bought a modded one with JMP or “plexi” specs off a local guy and it was an awesome medium OD pedal. I don’t really play a lot of guitar anymore so I sold it, but it sounded great. I’d look around for modded ones and see if you can’t get something cool out of it.

MXR '78 is, by the schematic, a DS-1 with Kelley mods, but people say they don't sound the same. I have one that was given to me. It does a thing that's okay, adding hair and frizz with a bit of distortion when the tone knob is at half of less. But it's not my sound and I don't really use it. Seems like it might work for someone trying to make a non-master Marshall sound like a Jose modded 800 with the diode clipping--80s hair stuff.

Buffer>Transistor boost>op amp gain stage>tone stack>buffer

Get a simple transistor booster and run it into an op amp distortion/OD. This would give you a lot of options, moreso than with just the DS-1.
A cheap solution would be an EHX LPB-1 into an IC muff, or a rat, or an Elements with no clipping diodes.

Rat and IC muff might have pretty high levels of distortion even at their lowest settings with a boost going into them. So a cool option I think that should still get you in the same ballpark but with greater gain range would be a CMOS overdrive like the Red LLama. The EHX Hot tubes is a clone with some other stuff going on. LPB-1 > Hot Tubes Nano would be rad. As much as I hate EHX.

I had 3 Elements at some point and none worked great with my setup. I think I'll try the EAE Longsword.
