Penny-pincher budget boards/setups - a spinoff, a challenge

Post by rustywire »

What is the coolest, most interesting board you can build on a hard budget, with additional restrictions?
I'm genuinely interested in seeing how far ppl can stretch them monies and streamline a setup for their vision or needs. Lowballers, don't take this as encouragement to be obnoxious.
This isn't a "build the best most versatile rig!" kinda thread, nor is it a "build a touring board you can easily replace" or "who can assemble the most site-darlings for a song!" and should function as more of a thought exercise for some gear fanatic who needs to put the clamp on that moneyclip and challenge oneself.

Category 1: $500, no DIY builds, no gifts. Secondhand or new-only in current marketplace [good example: $40 Boneshaker, or a priced-to-move motivated listing]
Category 2: $500, no DIY or gifts, paying no more than $100 for each pedal
Category 3: $1000, no DIY or gifts etc. [no individual spending restriction, this could be a single $950 pedal and necessary connections]
Category 4: $1000, no DIY or gifts, paying no more than $200 for each pedal

Local stores, private offline sales or online and international. Wherever you can source your tools and toys [within reason] and provide receipts. Purchases made in the previous 12 months can count, but nothing prior to 2017.

No restriction to how many pedals/devices etc unless otherwise limited by the individual pricing limits within categories 2 & 4. Power supply/batteries/patch cords/cables ALL count toward the respective cost totals, plan accordingly, be practical. This is for effects setups-only. Instrument, amp, speakers, lessons not included.

The prizes: scoring badass effects for bargains and the accompanying satisfaction of premium results on shoestring budget :joy:
Everyone who participates and anyone caught mirin is a winner :)*

Let there be many photos [I'll put my limited-money where my unfiltered mouth is and post up after the 'bowl]
Just identify which category you're trying to finesse when posting and if you'd like to share sonic results... clips

:snax: :snax: :snax: :snax: :snax: :snax: :snax: :snax: :snax:

Edit & update:
The new rule is fewer rules.

Create your own category if you like, challenge yourself and show off a well-actualized vision. 1up your pal like anything you can do~
If you have a complicated rack or tabletop setup what are some stepped down, even spartan rigs you [might] put together, attempting to impose restriction with minimal or maximum concession. Go for it.

That, including board, sunn alpha 115 amp, repair parts, cables, power, and brand new fancy aluminum replacement pots was under $400. I have a guitar I like that I spent under $100 on too if you want to throw that in. Fits in the budget.

This is a good idea Mr. Wire. I wanted to make a similar thread were like once a week you scoured BST and built boards based on awesome stuff selling there.

I can build a pretty cheap board based from stuff I acquired for nothing over the years. I'll take a pic tomorrow. THIS IS WHY I DON'T THROW ANY THING OUT.
"SWIPE LEFT ASSHOLE!" -retinal orbita
"Whatever ASSHOLE here’s my pedal that makes humpback whale noises and also it has a built in sequencer so stick it in your craw! -retinal orbita
"Patty Mullen takes me from a ball peen to a sledge" -The Great Velvet Hammer
"...at this exact moment Divine has learned of your jealous scheme from the local town gossip. She also has your address, ASS HOLE!" -Narrator (Mr. J) PINK FLAMINGOS

Damn I've played with this thought so many times. Unfortunately I haven't... had money to justify building one of these. That makes sense

If I replace my diy rat with my $22 metal zone (that I nodded to remove the fixed tone gyrators) then my board qualifies:

Korg DT10 $30
Metal zone modded $22
Boss DD6 $65
Prebuilt rub a dub reverb $50 with power supply
Planet waves 3pack patch cables $15
One spot daisy chain $5

$187

When i saw this I knew it was you.

How many tide pods can I get for $500?

For real tho: my current board is all the categories. You’ll know which one after Bilf.

@DRod great way to set off the thread. That's how you stunt :success:

Yeah $100 tier, $200 tier good ideas, go for it! In either case there the DIY d00ds should also take part. A hundy or 2 is def more of a challenge to ya than half a grand

I'd grab 5 Metal Zones, a Squire bass and a Roland Cube (all used) and spend the rest on Arby's.
