Re: Jag-stang bass
I just played a black Jag bass this afternoon, slightly used and not expensive.
Sounds great, I expected to go “Yawn almost a Jazz”, but was surprised.
Very versatile and feels great although a bit neck heavy.
I’ve been thinking about whether I really need it or not all afternoon.

Re: Jag-stang bass
I never liked the jag-stang....neither did Kurt actually. I'd prefer a regular jaguar or mustang bass.

I have been drooling over jag basses for the last year, but haven't played one yet. I was thinking they'd be too much like my Jazz, but if MM says they're different enough... well, crap. That bass moved up yet another slot up on the GAS list.
I'm more like a mids-ist than a bassist.

I've heard one live, it sounds somewhat similar to a Jazz bass I personally wouldn't get one if I had a Jazz bass but the versatility is probably crazy

Re: Jag-stang bass
That is what surprised me about it.
The active is roughly the same level as the passive, and in active the treble, bass and master tone all affect your sound.
The parallel/serial switch is a nice feature, as are the pickup switches.
With the S/P switch on a standard Jazz I think you’d get pretty much the same sound as the passive side of the Jag. Well taking into account the body thickness (Jag is thinner).
I have tried a couple of active Jazz basses and didn’t like the sound at all, in fact the jag is the first active bass I have played that sounded right.
They should have gone with ultra-lite tuners though, sitting, the body shape and heavy tuners made for a lot of neck dive. Standing shouldn’t be a problem with a good non slip strap.
If the Jag had through body stringing, I probably would have jumped on it.
Hmm wonder how it would look in metallic copper orange with a touch gold.

Re: Jag-stang bass
I just bought the Jaguar bass and I lOVE it. feels like a jazz but so many more options. The passive mode is what I like the best about it, but I like the option of the active. The active is not "too-active" if you know what I mean. I like my japanese fenders and this is one of the best I've ever had. It plays well with dirt pedals, especially with the phase switch and cut switches, and the master tone knob that works in both passive and active mode.
Oh, and mine is sunburst with aged neck and inlays. Looks straight outta the 70's
