Best Clean Boost

Post by JereFuzz »

What is a good clean boost that grabs you distortion/overdrive/fx chain puts it into the boost pedal, has a low gain input so your signal won't distort, and output a faithful reproduction of the signal with significant volume boost. I want to cleanly amplify a preamp to a power amp.

Zvex Super Hard On (SHO) is best at this from my experience. I have used clones as I am not paying that much for a real one.

The Dr. Scientist Cleanness could be cool if you want EQ.

TC Electronics Integrated Preamp.

You can run it up to 36vdc if you want to max out the headroom for big signals. Has treble and bass tone section, but with both set at zero (center), the response is about as flat as a pool table.

I used to have one but remember it distorting quite a bit ...

Yo just use a Fuck and roll with the dirt?

Also with single coils you can actually dial it in pretty clean.

It's the best pedal.

I second the MXR Micro Amp (or a clone thereof). In my experience it is significantly cleaner than both the ZVex SHO and EHX LPB-1. I love both of those as well but compared to the Micro Amp I hear coloration of the signal when I use 'em, and with the Micro Amp I don't hear anything but a louder version of what was already there.

Which is why in real world gigging situations I always use either the LPB-1 or SHO

Yeah it's true, the MA is *too* clean to really be a good "boost" because a truly effective boost usually needs a bit of salt and pepper on what you put into it. It's main uses are to drive the motherfuck out of a muff while you pretend to be jack white, or to be a completely neutral level increase.
