Zoom G3n/G3nX/G5n

Post by JereFuzz »

Anyone use these multi-FX units? I have the G3X and really like it. It's nice to have a grab and go unit if you are going to a friends house to jam, thereby cutting down on setup time. Zoom's ZFX4 chip is great (which is in the G3X) and I hear the G3n has better, less noisy, chip but the "n" lost some functionality such as no XLR out, no battery power, limited fx space (amp/cab models take more slots - probably due to power consumption of new chip), and no music over usb. I'm fine with this. BTW, Zoom is notorious for eliminating Great features on great products. I have a music production studio box, HD8CD, that I wanted to upgrade to the newer version, the R24 since the R24 creates 24bit wav files vs 16bit wav files, but Zoom eliminated midi interface capabilities as well as other capabilities. Anyway, just wondering if anyone has any comments about this/these units.

Can't offer much, except I'm currently looking at the G1on and G1Xon for on the go playing because pedal sims as well as amp sims and small and cheap.
Good deals: OsbornKT, Phantasmagorovich, UglyCasanova, DarkAxel, Skip, D.o.S, ColdBrightSunlight, Eivind August, Goroth

I had a G3 for awhile. Sounded good, but I'm a live tweaker and there was a momentary cut in audio when switching the effect type on a patch, so it didn't work for me. Shouldn't be an issue for people setting up patches at home and then using them as is.

A Zoom G5 partially replaced a Digitech GSP1101 back when my rig was 100% digital, i.e., was placed in the effects loop of the GSP1101 to allow for additional amp models and effects. Everything about the G5 other than its expression pedal was decent. I also recall the G5 being more dirtbox-friendly than the GSP1101 when I began to reintegrate stompboxes into the mix.

I still use a Zoom MS-70CDR, which has effects algorithms that are probably comparable to what the n series offers.

Digitech needs to significantly improve its modelling technology. After I bought the G3 I got rid of my RP1000 because the RP sounded weak in comparison. The GSP1101 is basically an RP1000 w/2 processors vs 1 for the RP1000. If the G3n is an upgrade in terms of amp modelling to the G3 it's an instant buy for me ... the G3 sounds great now. The "tube" function for the amp models is a great feature that really allows you to shape your tone.

The only reason I continued to use the GSP1101 was the c63 firmware custom IR upgrade, which was rendered obsolete when the Atomic Amplifire hit the scene. Still, compared to the Amplifire, I'm fairly certain the Zoom G5 generated less unwanted noise with certain pedals. If Zoom could offer a unit with their current amp modeling, customizable, IR-based speaker simulation, and all effects from the MS-70CDR, I would probably only need one multi fx unit in my current rig.
