Chase Bliss Audio - Tonal Recall Red Knob Mod (RKM)

Post by affectperdals »

I finally took the plunge and bought a Chase Bliss Tonal Recall. I wanted to try the Red Knob Mod because I’ve never played it. A friend of mine has the original version and that’s pretty cool. Some people might no like the extra noise but I do. You can dial it back if you lay off the tone knob a little bit. It’s definitely one of the best analog delay pedals I’ve heard. Using the dip switches to automate the knobs is some next level business! I just finished up a video on it and wanted to share. Anyone else have one? Got the blue knob version? Both? What do you think? Know of a better analog delay?

It's a masterpiece. I couldn't bring myself to purchase the blue knob version for whatever reason, but on a whim bought the red knob the day it was released. I can't stop using it now.
This course, a perpetual alternation of determining what is true, and then setting aside this determining, constitutes, strictly speaking, the steady everyday life and activity of perpetual consciousness, a consciousness which fancies itself to be moving in the realm of truth.

I got one last week, also sort of on a whim—I knew the second I played a couple of notes that I had to buy it. I had the blue knob version and really liked it, but not enough to keep; I sold it after probably a month or two. The RKM has fixed all of the issues I had, mainly the kinda-too-short-for-the-money delay time and the overall darkness.

I dunno though... I feel like I had those couple of issues, but this thing just sounds way better in general. As I find with pretty much all CB pedals, it's great at crazy stuff but is also wonderful at subtle settings. For the past few days, I've really kept it pretty low on repeats and mix / some nice slow modulation / tone set just about at noon, and it almost adds the same washy sound as a reverb, just with the added delay texture. I've had a hard time turning it off.

Of course I'm gonna continue to dig deep and explore the myriad possibilities with it, but for now I can say that my initial impression is just thoroughly blown away. :!!!:

I want to get mine Red Knobbed! I just don't have the extra hundo right now. I'd prefer it be cheaper too but that's mostly because I'm a cheap ass.

Yea dude, after I got used to the dip switches it opened up a lot of possibilities for weirdness... but the "normal" settings sound really nice.

I had the blue one and sold it. The repeats on the original were way too quiet, and they all but disappeared when you hit it with some fuzz. The repeats on this one are much stronger. I can even do those cheesy, Floydian riffs with this now.

The other big thing it fixed for me was the feedback. It's a TON more useful now. The feedback doesn't get chirpy as easily, and it doesn't fade away as quickly. If you want to play around in the near-run-away feedback territory it behaves really nicely now. Can do some really fun swells and pads with it if you want to. The only delay I've had with smoother and more controllable feedback was the Malekko Ekko 600D.

Overall this is probably the best delay for my needs. It sounds beautiful, and it can give you oversaturated, lo-fi goodness if that's what you want. It's really hi-fi, but not quite as clear as my DMMTT550. It definitely has the best feature set of any delay I've had too. I'm really glad Joel fixed the delay levels and feedback, because I really liked this thing before but couldn't live with how weird the mix and regen knobs were.

Thx for the kind words my friend. The only thing I'll say with the blue knobber is that we did have some calibration bumpiness in the early days of the Tonal Recall blue knob release. We really got it down now so if you played a blue knob version now it'd probably be pretty different than your first blue knob experience.

That all said, I prefer the red knob for many of the reasons you mention and as of right now is my favorite Chase Bliss pedal and I'm very proud of it.

We had it cooking pretty good, but our main calibrator in chief Zack Warpinski is on tour for the next 3 out of 4 weeks. He's the only person I trust to calibrate them, and that includes myself unfortunately.

So I'd say if you sent yours in now it'd be an honest 6 weeks.

it says on the website you can keep the knobs as long as you give them notice.
