The Purge--Digital Delay Deathmatch

Post by Gone Fission »

So lets say you get an awesome whiz bang superdelay that does a bunch of things really well, has the modern conveniences, integrates superbly into your rig, makes you espresso, and so on. But, like me, you've been a mild hoarder of good but not quite amazing digital delay pedals. And it's time to cull some or all of them--space, clutter, simplifying, spare cash, . . .

So on the chopping block, I've got:
Akai Headrush E-2,
Digitech Digidelay,
Digitech DL-8 Hardwire, and
Vox Delaylab.

I like them all, they all do cool sounds, yada yada. All loop, but none have become my natural go-to. Oversized ain't fatal to me for the Akai and the Vox.

Anyone want to advocate that I'd be a fool to part with one of these? Anything unique that I would be missing out on?

(I'm keeping the ILF-DD, so no fucking dibs on that.)

I'd keep the Vox Delay Lab. If space isn't an issue, might as well keep the options and dedicated tap-tempo switch.

None of them are exactly going to bring the big bucks - if you like them, the pocket change ain't worth it IMO.

I have owned a LOT of delays, and one that really does a lot of things well is the DL-8 (in my opinion).

If I wanted to hold onto one as a do-everything keeper, it'd be the Vox or the DL-8. The DL-8 is compact and easy-not a lot of fine control, but you don't need it to sound good. The Vox has more control and is more finetune-able, can do a whole lot of specific-ish things. I have a notion one or the other might survive the purge just on that options level. But I am so covered.

So I was wondering if anyone was going to argue that one does ________ like nothing else. I would have figured that would have been the DigiDelay's stutters.

And I do want to declutter. I'll probably list them all for fair prices and see what moves. I'm not gonna finally get that operation with the proceeds, but someone should get better use than I'm getting out of them. None are all that rare or that dear, so I can find another if I make a horrible mistake. But I really think it's time to move on to more particular things and/or things that can be assimilated into the self-aware shoegaze rig.

A self-aware shoegaze rig needs a half dozen delays.

My rack has grown prodigiously. I've got a half dozen that will do MIDI controllable delays there alone.

Then you're most of the way there, but you never know when you'll need four or six on the floor!

Realistically out of your list, I'd keep the Headrush just for recording purposes or routing strangeness since it has the individual head tap outs.

That's the one killer feature on those that has gotten me to almost buy one a half dozen times.

Headrush is the best looper of the bunch. Sort of bare bones, but the ability to undo to the first layer and keep the levels fixed is nice. Might be a keeper if yours is noise free.

Have only owned the Digidelay of the bunch. Love the Hold-mode, but as a delay-pedal it didn't impress me. Still miss that Hold though.

At least one vote for each.

Do you folks watch "Hoarders" with utter confusion as to what the problem is?

I'm in the camp of 'Effort to sell > What you will make'. If space is not an issue I don't see a reason to not hold on to them.

I probably own in the neighborhood of 100 pedals, but pedals are easy to store and don't take up a lot of space. You would honestly never know I had so many if you came into "my studio" ( ).
HOARDERS gives me straight up anxiety watching it. Good Goodness. Especially the people that hoard expired food...fuark... :animal:
"SWIPE LEFT ASSHOLE!" -retinal orbita
"Whatever ASSHOLE here’s my pedal that makes humpback whale noises and also it has a built in sequencer so stick it in your craw! -retinal orbita
"Patty Mullen takes me from a ball peen to a sledge" -The Great Velvet Hammer
"...at this exact moment Divine has learned of your jealous scheme from the local town gossip. She also has your address, ASS HOLE!" -Narrator (Mr. J) PINK FLAMINGOS

I have a distinct view of the difference between a "collector" and a "hoarder" when it comes to pedals.
A pedal collector buys pedals because they're either interested in them or because they need them for some reason.
A pedal hoarder is the dude that buys a shit ton of pedals and then sticks them in a box because they have no intention of doing anything with them.
