What pedal is being used? (Childish Gambino "Redbone")

Post by tommyharron »

hey y'all.

I'm trying to find a pedal that will give me the sound of the "pinched" and "gnarly" sounding guitar at the 3:53 minute mark in this video:

Any thoughts?

Cheers,

I think a lot of nasty, compressed, thin-sounding fuzzes will do that.

Thank you for your suggestions so far!

I'm having a hard time finding something that's pinched and compressed, but without the bass. Would something like a octavia be in line?

At the risk of sounding remedial, what sorts of EQ options do you have available and what sort of application are you looking for?

I'm running a tele into a Blues Jr. Mainly looking to use this for soul/funk single note melodies (a la the video).

A fuzz factory on the bridge pickup at a super compression/gatey setting would get you right into the ballpark.
I'd also look at a lot of Basic Audio pedals, like the Spooky Tooth, Gnarly, pale Rider etc etc

I have a sneaking suspicion you could get there on the gated side of a Team Awesome Fuzz Machine pretty easily. I'd try for ya right now but my gated side shit the bed a while back and now I've got a pretty years so I haven't even thought about it.

Maybe also the blackout fixed fuzz deluxe?

Thanks, everyone. I'll be hitting up some pedal shops around here next week. I'll report back.

The Pale Rider seems to get really close actually. Thanks for the suggestions!

It's hard to pull the trigger without trying it. But Basic Audio is hard to find in NYC.

I think any fuzz with a velcro/zipper kind of description and a tone knob turned to the trebly setting would do this for you. I'd look for something trashy like a Jordan Bosstone clone, maybe a Toe Tags EF1 or an Analog Man Peppermint. Basic Audio and Fuzz Factory are also great recommendations, and I was just listening to a demo of the Black Cat Monster K today—that would totally fit the bill as well.

Key elements: a fuzz that can get that chewy sort of sound, with an EQ knob/knobs that can get that really tinny sort of focus. Lotsa stuff will do it.

Yeah honestly John at Basic Audio is second to none when it comes to fucking sick Vintage fuzz tone without charging like $500 a pedal like some peeps do. I adore his work, I just have no worldly use for any of it. I highly implore you to try hunt some down though. Even if you had to take a chance I'm sure you'd be able to get ya money back if it wasn't good.
Furthermore, if you were to email John with this very question he'd probably be happy to point you in the right direction. He's a top bloke.
