Modding a Fuzz for Dual Mono?

Post by veteransdaypoppy »

so, i'm in a perplexing predicament

i'm probably going to start using a two-amp live setup. i'm actually using the pre/post loop function of my mobius right now, but for simplicity's sake let's just say:

my single-amp pedalboard rig as of now is:
guitar -> Peterson Tuner -> EM-drive -> Strymon Mobius -> Homemade fuzz thing -> Strymon TimeLine -> out to amp

once i switch to using 2 amps though, i'd like to do this (- means mono, = means "stereo"):
guitar -> Peterson Tuner -> EM-drive -> Strymon Mobius => Homemade Fuzz thing => Strymon TimeLine => out to 2x amps

but my homemade fuzz thing only has 1x mono in and 1x mono out. :( :( is there a way to mod my ordinary 3pdt true bypass fuzz to add a stereo in and a stereo out without throwing a second identical circuitboard in that enclosure? ultimately my goal is to keep the benefits of the Mobius's stereo outputs and also be able to get my fuzz out to two different amps without having to change its place in my chain

pls help :joy:
well i guess, but i just don't know.

No, if you want to retain stereo separation you'll need a duplicate fuzz circuit to support the other side, otherwise summing two inputs and splitting two outputs in the fuzz will just sum to mono.

You could retain a single set of controls though, via dual gang potentiometers, so use would be similar.. though if you have an LED & true bypass you might want to fix up with a relay/millenium bypass instead of a 4PDT latching stomp.

Dag, that's a drag. I figured, but I thought it was worth asking y'all wizards down here in the solder dungeon. Thanks for the help!

If you have a mid side encoder + decoder, you can fuzz the center channel, dry wet the center channel, encode m+s to L+R. You can do it live but it works better in post production.

That is a good point I had not considered, though MS in hardware is probably introducing a much higher level of intensity than simply banging out another channel of fuzz. I own a stereo linked two channel fuzz, having the fuzz artefacts follow the dimension of the stereo field is a highly enjoyable feature that an MS plot would not achieve. That said, I'm usually hitting it with a stereo sub-mix as opposed to a single source, so - differ'nt strokes for differ'nt folks & all that.

That's a cool idea, never thought about doing that technique in hardware. I'd probably do the opposite way if it was for me; clean center, fuzzed up sides.
