Getting back into fuzz: Make suggestions (DIY possible)

Post by Faldoe »

I've had:

FZ-2 - boost was sick, other modes were good but not all that great in the end.

Pharaoh - built this, sounded good, maybe I should build another.

Fuzz Factory - same as above.

Wolf CPU - built this, great for crazy stuff, not a very fat or thick fuzz when playing it loud/through a half stack. Still a keeper though.

I'm thinking I need to get a Germ Fuzz Face? I'm not looking for splatty stuff. Looking for stuff that can yield a different texture from my amp's gain channels - Fryette Pittbull UL - but not be overbearing with too much gain and get lost in the mix. This mix being playing with another guitar player that uses fuzz and maybe a bass player that also uses fuzz.

Germ Fuzz Faces are my fave. If you're not into using your volume knob, then maybe they're not for you... or maybe like with me, a germ FF will be the thing that finally shows you the light as far as the volume knob goes. Fave I've owned is probably the Guitarsystems Fuzztool. I don't know the full tech explanation for the tone/range knob, but to my ears it goes beyond just tone and includes a little bias adjustment as well.

I also have an AM Sun Face and an old large-box Fulltone '69, both of which are NKT-275s. I'd highly recommend any of the three.

Some other super versatile silicons that can get very OD-ish as well as typically fuzzy: Algal Bloom, Skreddy LMMD, Fairfield Four Eyes

Or even just a general light or dark boost if that's too hi-tech :idk: ? Boost boost boost :trippy:

For something different, maybe try building an ESR Graphic Fuzz. They look interesting imo.
