Smooth Fuzzes?

I have a confession- I don't actually own any fuzzes and don't know much about them.
Anyone got some recommendations for something that sounds in the neighborhood of the ProjectV/WarmJet?
Those look amazing but they are more than I'd like to spend right now

Clusterfuzz is fucking rad sounding and culturejam is a solid fuzzbreax. There's no downside.

Not to get all TGP about it but I think a lot of the smoothness w/r/t fuzz circuits comes from your attack.

Warmjet is cheaper than a clusterfuzz and you can go wrong with Ghost either. Clusterfuzz sounds great and I want to try one.

Try to catch one of the ghost auctions, get the pcb, or just talk to Ian.

Another option would be something like a fuzz unit clone (more big muff in flavor, but smoother than the warmjet). There are companies/builders like lowbrow and Jimmy Behan/super electric doing low priced vintage circuits at reasonable prices. They do good work too. But ghost's prices are around the same as those others (like half or less of the pigdog world).

Excellent suggestion. Clusterfuzz is a good introduction to smooth fuzz.

Warmjet may be kinda versatile with all the controls mounted externally, but Clusterfuzz is more versatile. Probably a little smoother too.

Yepp. Rolling off yr tone knob, playing with yr fingers, or just playing lighter and closer to the 12th fret will do a lot in terms of smoothness. When I play my Warmjet with the tone wide open I wouldnt really call it smooth, its pretty damn ragged. Run roll of the tone knobs and its got a much more mellow and "smooth" sound.

Tis a rad fuzz either way.

Nah, getting all TGP would be not being into fuzz or rejecting anything without a tone/treble control to knock down most of the fuzzy attributes.

For reals about attack dictating the tone. When I was a kid I was in a classic rock/proto blues lawyer space and hated pedals that couldn't give me a smooth attack Eric Johnson-y sound. I gave up on picks for years to try to sound smoother. Somehow, in ways I can't quite explain, I figured out how to get a smooth, compressed-sounding attack with a pick when I want it. No special/specific gear needed. Now if only the rest of playing weren't shit.

I got mine last summer or something for i think in the mid 100$ range new I think. If the price went up, might as well go for the clusterfuzz. Anyway, he does sell the pcb and run auctions here and there where a deal could be possible (I think that is how I got mine...I don't remember, just getting it shipped while out of town).

Not to disregard the comments about attack and your fingers and junk, but I've consistently found Muffs and variants therein to be really smooth compared to other fuzz circuits. I'm sure there are exceptions though. My personal favorite I've tried is the Eau Claire Thunder, although I don't mind my cheap, big, standard new york Muff.
My friend has a nano muff and I can't stand listening to it, but I think he has the tone on full and his set up is already painful bright, so it just sounds awful.

Agreed on Muffs generally being smoother, and I second the ECT. My favorite Muff varient Ive tried for sure. I wanna get a baby thundaa someday.
