F*ck it, I'm throwing together a second board...

Post by frigid midget »

Sick of not using some of my favorite pedals, and having to make tough gear decisions. Moving everything to a giant board doesn't make sense either, I don't want to haul around a big ass board with 6 dirt pedals and than only use two of 'em if that's what a particular jam/situation calls for...:idk:

So since I'm just a couple pedals short for making a second board that's more than just a collection of left overs that didn't make the main board...

I'll let you guys give me some inspiration for the little shopping spree I'm planning :excellent:

Fist pic shows the latest incarnation of the small board. The big one is roughly twice that size. I like to keep things straight forward, and I don't go the boutique route unless there's an actual reason not to spend half as much on the boss alternative.

So far on the want list: Small Clone, Avalanche run, Ibanez DE-7. Everything else would be purely GAS driven, even more so that the rest.
Dirt: An od that's not as dark and muddy as the hotcake? Another fuzz in the vein of the clusterfuzz, only smaller/simpler/cheaper? Don't really care for modulation, but I'm open to ideas for something unique that could maybe help with making eery/ambienty stuff :idk:

Pretty much everything else that I want to use:

Fabtone: The sound of a nuclear meltdown. There's a reason Mogwai digs this mahfakker. Deserves a spot, even though it's not exactly a transparent always-on overdrive.
Maxon D&S: My favorite muff, after trying a bazzilion of 'em. Doesn't need a bunch of silly scoop/crunch/mids/focus/whtver controls to sound badass.
OBD-3: Sounds like the bastard child of a big muff, hm-2 and fz-2 threesome. Disgusing and annoying, in a good way.
Freeze: Didn't make it to the current main board cause it apparantly needs its own unregulated shitty ps.
DOD FX-20: Just a solid phaser for the occasional swooooaash.

I'll see what goes on which board and how/when everything will be used after I'm done shopping :snax:

hehe yeah, I'm kinda bored, and got a little extra moolah that I'd like to spend on whateever my GAS tells me to spend it on.

So....what's the end-all-be-all superfuzz these days? What about alternatives for the small clone or the DE-7? The latter seems to suffer from inflated prices due to the omg-cheapish-self-oscillation!!! hype :idk:

Smallsound Bigsound Buzzz and Dwarfcraft Necromancer would probably be the most IlF-cred superfuzzies to choose from.

Here's a list I had saved of some super fuzz-based pedals, from my own personal notes:

-Behringer SF 300
-Black Cat Super Fuzz
-Boss FZ-2
-Boss FZ-3
-Creepy Fingers Harikiri
-Devi Ever Silver Rose (has a Super Fuzz side)
-Dwarfcraft Devices Necromancer
-Dwarfcraft Devices Silver Rose V2 (has a Super Fuzz side)
-Earthquaker Devices Fuzz Master General ("based on the Ace Tone Fuzz Master, which itself is a pretty straight clone
of the super fuzz, with apparently the slightest of differences.")
-GoochFx Superbfuzz
-Guyatone TZ-2 The Fuzz
-Idiotbox Effects Ron Fucking Swanson Super Fuzz
-Lastgasp Art Laboratories Sooper Fuzz 46
-Lastgasp Art Laboratories Super Fuzz 45
-Malekko Omicron
-Maxon FA10 Fuzz Elements-Air
-Maxon FA10 Fuzz Elements-Ether
-MJM China Fuzz
-Smallsound/Bigsound Buzzz
-Smallsound/Bigsound Super Puzzle
-TSVG The Fluzzy
-Voodoo Lab Super Fuzz
-Wilson Effects Knuckle Dragger

Nice, that should give me buzzy for a while :)
I know most of the ones in that list, or at least heard of them...But a bunch of others I definitely want to check.

Btw, any reason the BYOC Leeds isn't in your list? And the Wattson FX stuff? Also, I thought the Voodoo Lab only shared the name, but is really based on the Jordan Bosstone. Right? And I've got an FZ-3 has nothing to do with the superfuzz circuit either, it's a somewhat muddy fuzzface imo, at best :idk:

Besides that, you saved me a bunch of work putting together a list liket that for myself, cheers :)

And the Buzzz has been on my list for a while, it seems to hard to score a used one that's not like $20 cheaper than a new one :idk:

Yeah you're probably right, don't really know. Just a list of pedals that at some point I read and/or assumed were Super Fuzz based. The only one I've ever tried is the FZ-2.

I had a Wattson FY-6 for a while. Looks rad, and nails the classic Univox Superfuzz tone imo. Still, I flipped it and kept my FZ-2. I tried em side by side, and though the FZ-2 doesn't have that vintage mojo of the FY-6, Boss's take on the circuit is just a little more brutal and menacing, and the eq and boost mode are awesome extras. Never messed with the BYOC Leeds, but it's supposedly a pretty accurate clone too.
