The quest for American cleans.

Post by Iommic Pope »

Taking suggestions for a cheap sleeper (a la AOR price and quality) 100w head that is clean as fuck, takes pedals like a champ (distortion particularly) and can actually be found for peanuts in Australia (therein lies the rub. Degree of difficulty raised.).

Probably looking for that nice 6L6 output section.
I'm all covered for the warm tones of el34.

Might I suggest a Roland JC? No idea of availability/price around your way, but fits your "clean as fuck/takes pedals like a champ" paradigm there.

Probably about that.

Before your election I had considered it....now....

Honestly, I was thinking cheap Peavey.
I had a Valveking years ago and it actually sounded pretty good when loud and clean. They can be found sub $500AU.
I hear swapping some caps does wonders to them.
Wondering is anyone knew of anything else of that ilk.

You're right. I'll move to Oz and I'll bring whatever amp you want with me. :snax:

You can sometimes see various incarnations of 70s Bassmen on Gumtree <$1k.
Peavey Classic 50 might be a good pick up too if you are happy to go a combo and down a bit in wattage. My bassplayer uses an old one for guitar in his other band, clean as fuck and loud as fuck. Awkward to carry around, big heavy 212 but it was like $600.

Dunno really though. EL34s are my jam so I never really even thought about it.

I think cheaper bass heads are the sleeper guitar heads if you use pedals. Clean and more than enough power. See what Hartke or Gallien Kruger has in your price range.

Look for any music man. The hd130s are starting to become the goto amps for hipster bands that can't afford twins.

Yeah my little solid state ampeg bass rig sounds killer on guitar. It's a b2re. I bought it for $400 with the 4x10 cab, but that's America.

Actually I've been considering a SS bass rig for a different setup I want to run. I'll check that Ampeg out, thanks man.
Also Hartke's get around down here. My mate has two, he may want to part with one.
And if Music Man amps were a common occurance I would definitely have jumped one.

Was considering the Peavey classic line, also.
I did find a V1 Valveking for $400 last night. So there's hope there.

Faux "sounds like a 6L6" Fender, in your wattage range.

Get a Mustang V head. Cheap.

Set up one, maybe two patches to do what you want. Ignore the fact it can model other stuff if you don't want. Let it live on the BF Twin setting. Turn amp knobs like actual amp, ignore presets. Profit.

My pedalboard costs approximately 191 Metal Zones.
