Is there a pedal that does this?

Post by zoooombiex »

I've always wanted an effect that could do this but haven't come across one. Hoping I just missed it and you kind folks can point me to it...

I'd like a real-time tape reel (or record) slowdown kind of effect. Not the vibrato and crackles, but something that acts like you are putting your finger on a record (or tape reel) where it will slow down - even to the point of stopping - and then when you let go it will pull back up to speed/pitch.

Seems like it wouldn't be too hard (for those who know how to do this stuff). I imagine you'd need a decent-sized buffer that can record your input while the effect is engaged, and then simultaneously read off that buffer at a variable speed. A momentary switch to engage the effect. A few controls to adjust how quickly the speed drops when you engage the effect, how fast it snaps to pitch when you dis-engage it, minimum speed (down to zero). And sure, given the context, maybe some adjustable crackle, noise, and warble. Given my druthers, I'd also like a switch to have it slow down time only without affecting pitch.

The Catalinbread Zero Point sort of seems similar in some functional respects, but I don't want the flanging - so no dry signal while the effect is engaged. And I want the speed to go to zero.

Fuck I know there are delays that do this but my mind is drawing a blank. I think whatever has it calls it a "tape slam" or something similar.

Def not the most obtainable of suggestions, but I think the DigiTech Space Station has a few presets that does the slowdown/speedup thing.

I like that effect too, but I feel like it's been used a lot in various dance/pop songs of recent years.

the Hotone wally looper has a tempo knob that slows down the loop, not exactly what you're looking for, but, close?

If you hook up an exp-pedal, you can speed it back up to normal pitch as well, as you were asking for.

Thanks for all the suggestions! Very interesting. I'm still looking into them, but I think one of the main distinctions about the thing I was looking for is that it would not only slow down the pitch while engaged, but it would be recording what you are playing in the background while it is engaged, and then when you release the pedal it would play through that recorded material as it speeds up until it catches up to the present (which would mean going about unity speed/pitch until it catches up). I didn't describe that very well.

Copout/ilf flavor of the week answer: get an organelle and program it as a patch in pure data. ;)

Boss DD-6 does this in every mode except reverse

Boss DD-5 does it in reverse mode, but not in any of the standard delay modes. go figure.
