DIY Spring Reverb Unit?

Post by nieh »

so, I have a few spare spring reverb tanks laying around, how difficult would it be to build an external reverb unit? I'd imagine I would need some sort of preamp and all that jazz. anyone have any experience doing so?

Not hard at all, visualize the reverb tank input as being a relatively high impedance LOW WATTAGE speaker load (they generally range from 8 on up into headphone type loads, though higher Z units do exist). The output from your tank can basically be treated like a weak guitar signal.

Loads of fun.

It really depends on the tank. If it's a low impedance tank, then you can drive/recover with an opamp. If it's higher impedance, then it's more complicated. http://sound.westhost.com/articles/reverb.htm

Love love love the Surfy Bear. Totally nails that dripping wet surf tone. You can dial it back and get some more modest tones, but why? I took it to practice last Saturday and my guitarist has requested it for use in the studio when we go record in July. :yay: I built the older through hole version and it was a breeze. Undoubtedly the easiest part of the build was populating the board, and it's a really well made board too. Highly recommend it. very surf, much drip, such WOW!
