How cheap?
Fuzzonaut about the RM-1N:
"Amp in a box"?
No, there's no amp in there - tone fairies and feedback goblins live inside this box.

I'd go for a Loveless from Noise maker. If he likes shoegaze, the name and graphics would tell him something.

RV-3, rat, muff, Boss, DD7,...

With the right amp/guitar you can't really go wrong with that imo, at least not when it comes to starting out on a tight budget...:idk:

Digitech DigiDelay is dirt cheap and solid. I haven't tried the DigiVerb, but I hear it's as good. Good splurges for multieffects would include the Zoom MS-70CDR or 100BT or a Yamaha MagicStomp if he has a computer that'll still run the editor. A Boss PS-5 or PS-6 adds some excellent tricks and can run cheap used--I have nice rack harmonizers and still won't ditch my -5. Dirt is so subjective that I wouldn't even get into it without knowing the guitar, amp, and the bands whose sound he likes.

Fx500s and SPX90s can both be had for about a hundo. Not pedals, but real deal shoegaze gear for sure.

Rat>RV3

That'll cover a lot of ground. If he wants something more unique for a fuzz, Algal Bloom V2!

Just want to say, as a dude who was trying to do a shoegaze pedalboard on the cheap a few months ago, I fucking hated this pedal.

Will second all the digiverb recs.

The best possible way to go with chorus is an mxr analog chorus or mxr Zakk Wylde chorus (same thing, I'm pretty sure, and you can usually find better deals on ebay auctions and such)
This is a very impressive collection of Roto Toms. That's 21 Roto Toms in all. That is only $33.00 a Roto Tom.

Don't do this. The pedal sounds nothing like Loveless. It's just the graphic. The reverb/delay do very little and the fuzz is way too fuzzy for the MBV/Loveless sound.

If you want it on the cheap, you want to get a Digiverb and a basic digital delay, something like the Boss DD-5. The gain doesn't have to be anything crazy. Old school shoegaze was more loud overdrive gain than crazy fuzz. Maybe a Boss SD-1 and a Blues Driver. You need tremolo. You can get by with a cheap option, like the Boss TR-2. And of course, you need to bend the pitch to make it woozy. If your friend has a Jazzmaster or guitar with similar trem system, he can probably do it by hand. If not, look for a vibrato pedal. You could even get an old Boss PS-5 and use its flutter effect for this, like this guy:

Another shortcut is you could use a Zoom MS-70cdr for all your delay and reverb needs.

The Fuzzhugger Suneater would be great for this, as it has enough definition to cut through washes of delay and verb. Also Boss PS-2 or PS-3, as they have cool delays and awesome/weird pitch effects.
