The thread for overhauling a board that you're happy with

Post by phantasmagorovich »

Have you ever thought about overhauling a board that you are completely satisfied with? Because I love to GAS and obsess about stuff that I as of now REALLY don't need I've found this new game I'm playing:

How would a board look that does essentially the same stuff but is built of different pedals.

Does anyone else think about this? Replacements that are more or less the same but might add a new nuance or be simpler to use or something like that? It all started when I first heard of the Nemesis, which seems to be the death of Timeline wherever it shows up.

So, maybe replace the timeline for a Nemesis.
And how about replacing the Judder for a Charlie Foxtrot?
Which are the irreplaceable pedals? For example I haven't found any Looper that does the same as my Paraloop.
Which pedals are you using in a way that doesn't really do them justice? My Scrutator is essentially a Low Pass Filter in my setup.
And most importantly which fuzzes would replace your staple fuzz pedals?

Overhaul a board I'm happy with. I don't think I've ever done that....

It's what happens when your natural lust for new pedals collides with the satisfaction of a good board.

Don't do it. At least not without trying the CF first. I made that mistake and still occasionally kick myself. Even though the Judder was too deep for my lizard brain and was essentially using it as a one trick deal, that one trick was far superior to the one, one and half tricks of the CF.

Same here, I think. I'm in the middle of experimenting, comparing it with a few other things - meatball, ineko - trying to determine how much of the sound I'm getting out of it - dense HEAVY chokingonsomeoneelsesfilth kind thickness - is from the filtering, and how much from the sample/bit reduction. (As much as I love the meatball circuit, I haven't been able to get anything near as suffocating out of it.) Depending on the results it'll either go to BST, move to my ever growing try-in-superego-loop list, or dunno maybe stick around.

I haven't played with the expression options yet - I'm afraid that if I do, I'll have to keep the fucking thing. I have to imagine that the Scrutator, processing a drone, whether it's in series with my main rig, in the loop of the superego, or in a feedback loop, manipulated by my 8-step, custom copilot, or regular expression is going to be pretty fucking evil.

I've literally torn every pedal off my board and sold them al like 10 times lol!!

The problem with being a gear whore is you're new satisfied!

Right now I could part with everything I have. I don't care. I love the stuff I have but its whatever. It's no fun for me if I'm stuck with the same shit forever.

My board is pretty much all stuff that nothing else does the same way. Only disposable/swappable is the chorus pedal, and well, it's a chorus pedal. I push it on, and it choruses, that's all I want, something roughly equivalent to my Jazz Chorus when I'm using the Deluxe or something else if I want *that* sound. Not going to get cheaper than the $30 I spent on the Boss CH-1, and additional options, well, if I want crazychorus, I have rack stuff for that.

I have yet to find a better Space Echo simulator than the Boss one, etc.

The fuzzes/gain pedals I have all do special stuff in their own way.

Sure, I could go with a smaller boxed this or that...but...don't care.

Realistically I have room for one more 1590-sized box if I want it to be so, but I haven't found anything I need to fill it.

I'm 100% satisfied with the master board, doesn't mean I won't get additional things as they strike my fancy - it's just that those things end up as seasoning in the milk crate of ill repute more than fulltime residents of the lucky dozen.

I'm mostly thinking about this from a theoretical standpoint, don't worry, I won't get stupid. If I fantasise about this I'm mostly thinking about building a second board that has the same or a similar functionality, and could be A/B'd. And any way, I will not swap out any of the parts of the board I'm married to without deep testing and auditioning the possible replacement.

This way of thinking about my board, sound and pedals has led to an interesting turn in my mind. I now don't gas for pedals as much as thinking about refining my palette. This also leads to me thinking more and more about utility stuff that might coax interesting new sounds out of my existing collection, like a copilot broadcast or something the like.

All this won't stop me from spending money on the Zellersasn if I won't be late. And that is the perfect example of gas'ing for the new pedal.

YES, I do this!

Well, it's basically what I do with oscillating fuzzes. Different flavours and stuff. Interested in trying the C-bread glitch delay as a Possessed alternative as well. And more analog delays. And... well, those are basically the three effects I use. Which possibly adds to the fun of trying different takes on them. Would never actually switch anything out from my board if I didn't find something legitimately better, though. Just make more boards.

On my board I've got pedals that can be swapped out for something similar, yet different. For instance, I've got a flanger "spot"-for me it's either a Mr. Black Tunnelworm or a Mr. Black Shephards End. I have 5 fuzzes on my board-a spot for a suboctave fuzz (usually a Blue Box, currently a Perseus), an oscillating fuzz (currently Death By Audio Soundwave Breakdown), octave fuzz etc. I've got a pitch shifting "spot" (currently a Digitech Drop), etc. So it's nice to have a collection of pedals each in their respective families, to swap out different flavors here and there. I have an open spot on my board, where I plan on putting something glitchy eventually. Probably gonna get a Raptio v2 when it comes out as my first glitch pedal, but I'm thinking of ordering a Dwarfcraft Memento to put in that spot for the time being (but apparently there's a version 2 Memento in the works, as well  ).

So yeah, I have no interest in a complete board overhaul, because I've spent a lot of time developing my board into what it currently is, and am very happy with it, but I can do things like rotate different fuzz pedals in there for variety.

Keep the BF and shoot the others out to see what stacks well with it. Use it blow up their sound in addition to its own rad happenings.
I'd be very surprised if you weren't happy keeping it there.
Buzzz and HM2 would sound bad ass going into BF on low gain, FAC on 3/4, volume dimed.
WWPD?

I've been thinking a LOT about this shit now that you made this thread. LOL! I've been wanting to downsize for a few years now and every time I do, I end up buying more and more and more. I don't use most of the shit I have. It's kind of sickening. Like I have two H9's for God's sake. I could literally get rid of almost all of my pedals and just use those and have 90% of the effects I desire on hand.

Man...Maybe it's time for a massive overhaul. I have five power supplies, two boards and like 40 pedals. I'd like to be at like 8, but 8 really good ones. I think that's the sweet spot.
