help me out with Pitch Shifters

Post by Pete »

:poke:

So I have a Digitech Drop, which is cool for simulating detuned tunings. It's also got an octave down function, which is cool. Lately though, I've started thinking about getting a more encompassing pitch shifter to swap out with my Drop, so I can do more cool wacky pitchy stuff when I feel like it. :thumb: At this point, I think I've narrowed my choices down to the Boss Pitch Shifters and the Pitch Fork. Now I'm trying to figure out what would be best for me between the PS-2, PS-3, PS-5, PS-6, and Pitch Fork. I don't really know exactly what I want, other than octave(s) up, octave(s) down, and harmonized intervals in between. Not really sure if I want perfect tracking or not so perfect tracking. Controlling pitches with an expression pedal might be cool if/when I ever get an expression pedal, so maybe I could rule out the PS-2. I was researching the Boss pedals earlier today, taking notes and trying to learn the features of each and what exactly sets them apart, and after a while my head started to hurt. The PS-2 or PS-3 might be cool for the 2 in one pitch shifting/delay combo, especially since I don't own a delay pedal. But I tend to shy away from pedals that have like 5 million different, knobs, sounds and functions. Not that these pedals have a lot of knobs, but it's clear you can coax quite a lot of sounds out of them, before even getting into the delay settings. I'm the kind of guy who gets overwhelmed with possibilities and can't get anything done. So the PS-2 and PS-3 might keep me a little too busy.

Anyway, I figured it was time to open up the floor to you guys with your thoughts and suggestions. Pitch Fork vs. the PS family? Other suggestions? I've ruled out a bunch of other pedals like Wizard Of Pitch and Pitch Bay. It would be particularly helpful if anyone could chime in with their personal experiences, and the benefits and features of each pedal from the Boss PS line.

I think I have owned all the PS pedals at one time or another,
PS6 is wicked wicked awesome lots of features the S-bend on it makes me happy
PS-2 I used more for delay honestly the delays is great, the pitch is pretty good too i felt it was a little less toneful at times, kindof tinny to my ears
PS-3 I probably spent the least time with but felt it was an improvement on the 2
PS-5 is good but if you have a choice between 5 and 6 I would try to snag a six the harmonies on the 5 are great however

They are all lovely flippable pedals so Just grab one

Also don't forget the HR-2 can sometimes find for a steal and sounds very good.

Haven't played a pitchfork but with everything I have heard on it it is pretty good,

if you like the tone of the drop a whammy 5 may be up your alley too.

My initial thought was Whammy 5, too. But PS-X sounds cool, too.

I still haven't gotten my hands on a whammy 5
I think I have owned pretty much all the other whammy versions except the 5 and that giant thing they made a few years back.

The Boss PS6 is a great pedal, can do some cool shit with the S bend. I would put it at the end of my chain to just randomly drop the pitch of anything drenched in reverb and tremolo.

Never played the pitchfork but I honestly never got along with the tone of the POG. I think I just prefer the sound of analog octavers in the end.

I know I'm a broken record, but I have no problem with the sound of digital pitch shifters, and have two Pitchforks and a POG2 on my gigging board. As the stringed half of a two-man band, I would go so far as to say that they are absolutely central to my live sound. The trick for me is dirt after. Always always always dirt after pitch.
I'm more like a mids-ist than a bassist.

You mean the DT? I think that's what it's called.

The 5 is the teats. Great pedal. No idea why I sold it. Probably to buy diapers or some useless thing.
