Can't even with spring reverb pedals.

Post by popvulture »

Covered this before, but here I am again.

I've got two big amps—a Chieftain and a Twin. The Twin's reverb of course sounds as wonderful as an underwater cherub fart, but the Chieftain's leaves something to be desired, so I've sought solace in a pedal. Had the Flint, sold it because I thought the spring sounded like shit, and thought I'd found the solution in a Subdecay SST. Lately though, I've thought that the Matchless' verb, which is pretty weak, actually sounds better than the SST. I suppose I could try to make it footswitchable, but that just sounds like something I don't wanna bother with when there are probably better options in pedal form.

I'm thinking of just saying fuck it and getting out of the spring pedal game. I'm guessing nothing will ever come close to the real thing to me. I've tried the Wampler Faux and the Topanga, both of which are cool, but I'm really just getting kinda sick of this.

I've got a RM1N and a Bitquest on my board, so I can cover crazy verbs. I want something separate that I can leave on most of the time for subtler settings (signal will be completely dry sometimes, but not a lot), and was thinking of just getting some kind of non-spring digital verb that sounds nice and isn't trying to emulate some charmingly arcane vintage technology.

So I'm leaning towards a Reverberator. Lotsa settings, all of which sound good to me according to the demos I've heard, but I haven't gotten to play one in person yet. I'd probably mostly use the short decays. Plus I love Dr. Sci in general and think Ryan is the tits.

Thoughts? Other suggestions while I'm still on the hunt?

The RRR is great, definitely for the type of use you're describing.
The great thing with the RRR is that it doesn't weaken your sound like quite a few reverb pedals since it has the level control and it does indeed sound nicer than quite a few or even most amp verbs.

So are there any differences in the models? I'd gathered there was some varations in paint jobs and case size, but that they're all p much the same pedal. Could be wrong though?

"Radical Red Reverberator" got me wondering.

All the same in terms of sound AFAIK. Great pedal, I think it'll do what you want really nicely.

I was disappointed with every digital emulation I tried until I got the Boss one which ended the search. I even like it better than my Spring King, an actual analog spring reverb.

Which Boss are you talking about? The Fender Spring one?

I bought a Hardwire Supernatural and never looked at other spring reverbs again. The spring setting in that thing is great and the other ambient modes are great but for guitar I have it set to spring 90% of the time.

Or that because the guitarist in Shopping uses it and I fucking love their reverb sound.

I've thought about going the actual-spring-reverb pedal route (something like that one, or Spaceman, Reverbamate), but they're just too big. The Spaceman seems to be the smallest and actually pretty pedalboard friendly, but it's also just too $$$.

I've always liked Malekko's offerings. The chiklet and the spring chicken are both really nice spring reverb pedals.

Take a look at Recovery FX's Endless Summer.

Spaceman Orion. I have a tube reverb unit and don't use it anymore because the Orion is so awesome

The endless summer is more of a noise maker than a spring reverb, after about .001% up it starts getting so deep its more about crazy feedback and resonance than reverbs where you can actually hear notes. Its like instant Grouper.

The SolidGoldFX Surf Rider looks pretty nice.

FRV-1 does it for me very, very well.

It's Fender outboard tank, not "in the amp" verb, but it will go to wash city the Twin cannot even fathom should you want (or be just glorious standard Fender verb all day).

Killed my desire to get another outboard tank again soon after getting it.

Three years later, still happy.
