Re: Hum reunion
90s band reunions need to stop. Have any actually been good? They just sound old and worse.
Quicksand being the main offender for me personally. That band were so great. Visceral and raw. Walter's voice was punishing. Then he steps out fronting the reunited Quicksand, and he's softly singing the songs. These songs that were just so striking and heavy at the time, he's warbling the words like he would his own acoustic stuff. Lie & Wait is one of my favourite songs of all time, and there is is on stage, just sort of fumbling around, hugging himself like he's Morrissey, and singing it like a choir boy. Boo-urns. It sounded like some bad Quicksand covers that Guitar Hero had to put together because they didn't want to pay Polydor for the rights to the recordings.
As for HUM, this will be their 10th reunion or something, won't it?

Re: Hum reunion
Matt Talbott underrated IMO. Monotone....wat?
Hopeful he'll *do it right* far as reunion/reformation goes.
But I can think of 1 band to get it right as can be: Polvo
There is no other band (I can remember) who break up, reform with a new drummer 10 years later & release an album of new material which stands among the best in their catalog if not obvious as THE best...as if they picked up close to where they left off & took things to the logical conclusion. That just doesn't happen in music. Wells run dry, life wont wait etc.
They released In Prism in 2009 after I spent years wondering "what if-" and became the only band to return from the void and exceed my expectations.
If HUM can somehow do [that] I can only imagine the inspiration I'll draw from'm. I'm trying to temper my anticipation but strugglin

Bitch Magnet got it right, but there was no new music...and they're technically from the 80sMore_Divebombs wrote:90s band reunions need to stop. Have any actually been good? They just sound old and worse.

yeah, Polvo & Mission of Burma are the exceptions that prove the 'bands should not reunite' rule.rustywire wrote:Matt Talbott underrated IMO. Monotone....wat?

Re: Hum reunion
failure's reunion, live, was fucking great. even if they aren't on heroin anymore.
their latest album was just "ok" for me, but i'm still glad they got back at it.
also jeesh, hum and smashing pumpkins are nothing alike aside from being american and what instruments they play...

Yeah I'm sure they're not similar in dynamics or texture or general songwriting at all, and weren't operating in similar idioms for the entirety of their creative peaks. You're totally right.

Re: Hum reunion
Guys the Smashing Pumpkins were a band from the midwest that went quiet guitar quiet instruments LOUD INSTRUMENTS LOUD GUITARS and Hum were a band from the midwest that went LOUD GUITARS LOUD INSTRUMENTS quiet guitar quiet instruments they're totally different.
No, sir, actually I think you'll find that Hum were 'Alternative rockers who were adored for their thick layers of guitar and dreamy, introspective lyrics.' while the Smashing Pumpkins were 'One of the biggest alternative bands of the '90s, deftly mixing guitar-heavy '70s arena rock with the sullen mope-rock of the '80s.'
There is clearly a massive difference between the two.

Another resemblance is that both bands only have one good LP each.
