Who remembers UDS (Urban Dance Squad)?
Hailing from Amsterdam...
First rock band with an MC.
First rock band with a DJ.
I loved Rage Against The Machine, they perfected the hybrid, but UDS innovated first.
Admittedly, I found most rap/rock after Rage to be failed attempts...due to rock bands not being good at rapping (see Limp Bizkit), or hip hoppers not good at rocking (see Body Count)....or bands that shoe-horn in a DJ where it doesn't really fit (see Linkin Park and others). (IMHO)
Here's a vid from UDS's 1989 debut...a full 3 years before Rage dropped theirs.
(Cameos from Henry Rollins, Mike Muir, Flea, and Ice-T.)

I feel bad for the guy in Linkin Park. You can always hear like one little 3-second sample or something like once in their songs and you know it's just there to include him.

You can go even further back if you really wanted. Beastie Boys did some stuff. I've heard some really underground stuff from early 80s with punky band instrumentals and rapping.

Huh. I'd be interested to hear the punk stuff you're talking about.
I never said UDS did the first mixing of rock and rap. I mean Run/DMC did "Rock Box" in 1984.
But, as far as I've heard, UDS was the first to be an actual band with rock guitar and drums and an MC and DJ...making entire albums with that concept.
