Let's talk about LEDs

Post by Jero »

Been curious about this for a while, and with jwars jack thread (and as he & I are now one), it seemed like a good time.

Colors you like/dislike?
Bezel or no bezel? Does it depend on the layout/art?
Waterclear or diffused?

What about placement? At the top above the knobs? By the foot switch? Who gives a shit? Other?

I hate the LED placement on just about all of my pedals. Unless the room I'm playing in is dark as fuck, if I'm standing too far back I can't see what's on and what's not because the knobs or foot switches will obscure the LED indicators on my pedals.

Just the right brightness. I'm not landing any planes with my board.

Why can't builders incorporate the led placement into their artwork?

I don't care much about bezels for pedals other people build, but when I build for self or others, I use them just because they seem a bit more solid and seriously constructed.

Speaking on behalf of all blues lawyers I just wanted to say that LEDs rob you of clean headroom.

Having said that here are some cool LED placements.

I prefer bezel free, helps to drill the enclosure hole a few mics too small and press fit it into place.

Pretty much.

I can appreciate cool colors, shapes and placements, but ultimately I'm good as long as it lets me know whether or not my pedal is bypassed.

I generally like clear LEDs. Not a fan of blue. I hate it when they're blinding. THAT's super annoying, when you crouch down to adjust something and it's like being a deer in headlights.
I'm okay with short bezels, but not crazy about the tall ones like DBA uses.
I'm not a fan of them being drilled straight through the enclosure and sticking all the way out. I dunno what it is... it just looks unfinished. I can deal, when they're sunken and just about flush with the surface though.
My absolute favourites are Fresnel lenses. Love 'em!
Amber ones, like our pal Fairfield uses...

Placement... I dunno. I tend to think there's a natural spot that works with layouts/art. I think most people get it, but some just miss it all together and it looks like an afterthought.
My Rangemaster clone has the knob and LED on the side. I quite like that. Doesn't blind me, yet I never miss it when it's on.
I've always wondered if I could pull off a build that has the jacks, 9v and LED on the topside, all together. I may have to try that - I've not seen that before. I think that'd be cool.

I use various methods to dim/change colour of the brightest LEDs that blind my stoner eyes. Adhesive foil or tape is good, some bright white ones I've painted with purple glass paint.

Don't really have an opinion about placement. Kinda like the glowing knobs that some builders do. I'd say the astronaut-fish Upper has the nicest LED on my board, with that lovely green light underneath the tail.

The drummer I play with has a white Spaceman GIII where the lamp is built into a thing that you can twist for more/less brightness, that's really cool.
