Red Panda Context or Walrus Audio Descent

Post by bionic »

Need a reverb with buffered bypass for tails and have narrowed it down to these two. Anybody have any experience with either or would like to suggest another reverb?

Really depends on how important reverse reverb and shimverb is to you. If they are important to you then get the descent. Otherwise the context should have you covered for the best sounding reverbs you could ask for.

Yes and yes. It sounds very hollow and not present. #ambientnotes

The gated verb is really nice though.

^^^ that sounds like the exact opposite of how I like my reverb.

Anyone have good experience with the walrus customer service? I have been emailing them trying to get my bellweather fixed. They were super helpful until it came to me saying "cool, so how do I go about sending this in and getting I back with the mod done?" Then nothing. Several times.

If you could live without buffered bypass, I would tell you to give a little attention to the Splash MKIII, but it seems you've gotten some good advice in this thread already.

Have you been contacting Walrus recently? I think a lot of companies have been slow on account of the holidays and employee vacations, but if it's urgent then I would call them to get an authorization number. Good luck.

I've had some god-awful experiences with them.

My Bellwether had a distinct popping noise everytime you turned on the effect. I contacted Walrus Audio about getting it fixed, and paid quite alot of money to send it back. They received it, then I heard nothing. Two weeks later I get an email saying it's on it's way back to me. I get the pedal and lo' and behold, nobody had even touched it, the problem was still there. Turns out the guy who handles customer services AND fixes the pedals had been fired that week, so instead of fixing my pedal, they just sent it back.

Thankfully I kicked up a real shit-storm about it and they gave me my money back for the shipping and I got a refund from the UK dealer.

So in short, WA really lack any sort of professionalism. I get the impression the Bellwether was meant to be a flag-ship pedal for them, when in fact I think it stalled out of the gate because of the number of people having the same problem.

if you get the blend up on the context past half you get severe drop out I wouldn't play it like that unless it was always on and I could compensate with other stuff
I have never felt the need to blend it like that however
The verbs on it sound great to my ears and work well with dirt

I'll throw another one out there. The Talisman seems fairly responsive, and also has an internal switch for buffered bypass. This demo shows it in a more modern, ambient context than others I've found.

^Thanks for posting that. I don't know why but I never look at their pedals? Sounds really nice, control setup is comprehensive too. Just a really solid pedal.

Great, now I need to buy it cheers

Going on what I read here, I take it the Descent is out of the running? And the vol loss/compression on the Red Panda kinda ruins it, no?

Also more of a question rather than a suggestion, since I haven't messed with it myself: What about the source Audio Soundblox Dimension 2, or whatever it's called? The specs and clips seem ligit, too bad they went out of their way to make it look so extremely lame :s

Seems like it's more aimed at somewhat traditional/conservative reverb effects though, but it's got the preset, expression control, okay price tag,...:idk:

^^Really clean sounding verbs...it can get pretty whacky because you can modulate so many parameters....

"9 Adjustable Parameters — adjust the wet/dry mix, time (i.e. resonance), treble, bass, pre-delay, diffusion, output level, modulation rate, and modulation depth.

Multi-function In — use the Source Audio Dual Expression Pedal or the Hot Hand Motion Sensor for on-the-fly control over any of the 9 adjustable parameters."

Yeah, the more I read/hear about it, the more I'm tempted to snag one myself. I decided a long time ago that 'conservative' reverbs just aren't my thing, I seem incapabable of using em and NOT sound liker I'm into boring 90s shoegaze/postrock, or even worse: p&w

But if this Source Audio pedlol can do both actual hall/spring/plate reverbs, as well as more wacky modulated stuff, it might make sense to put one on my board next to my afterneath. Or better yet: I should sandwich a couple dirt peds between the Afterneath and SA Dimension reverb

Anyway, I'm derailig/hijacking here. Back on topic: Not sure if The Source Audio reverb is buffered or not...:idk:

The Walrus Audio Descent was SOOOOOOOO fucking disappointing to me that it kind of makes me sick. Actually all there shit has been. They are super nice guys, but their shit sucks ass on bass.

The Red Panda IMO is amazing and works, really, really well. I experienced no volume drops or anything but pure bliss with it. I'd go with this one before a lot of different verbs. It's awesome. I just wish it had expression control. That's really the only area it's lacking from my point of view. I like to slowing bring in verb or slowly take it out.

Always check the interior for the DIP switch to turn off P&W mode. :p

To be clear, the modulation source must be external, jacked in through the expression pedal input...given something like a Copilot Broadcast, Goatkeeper, 8 Step Program, Moog CP-251, Dreadbox Kappa2, what have you*, things can get...interesting.... :)* Even just a plain vanilla expression pedal can help you step closer to the cray.

*incl. midi or hot hand-based control options
