What is it gonna be used for? I had a volca beats for a while, and it was cool and all, but I found the limited amount of sounds to be very... limiting? I also have a Zoom RT-234 which is okay I guess. I don't know man, I think I'm generally bad at drum machining

Yeah, context is key. I love software-based rhythm apps and plugins for recording and home use, but would be hesitant to use them in a live setting (though there are folks who do). And standalone drum machines / sequencers are often more limited in terms of sound, but better designed for live use.

Also, any info on the style of music or type of drum sounds / patterns you like would be helpful.

have you messed with any before? I had an Akai XR20 and absolutely hated the menu diving necessary. from what I know about the SR-16, it seems the same. tried a bunch of app based ones, but still felt clunky. I recently got a TR-8 and am just in love with how forward it is. it's loaded with tricks and you can customize the shit out of the kits. it feels and is meant to be played like an instrument, so if you're just looking to program for backing tracks or play with pads you should try one of the aforementioned. some people *click* with them from the get go, but I became frustrated quickly.. only thing that bothers me about the TR-8 is you can't copy patterns from A->B. should be fixed soon

Yeah i'd be open to hearing about software choices / plug-ins as well.

I have Superior Drummer 2 which is fine for all the post rock, metal, stoner rock stuff that i do.

I want something for more experimental stuff. From 808 sound to industrial and everything in between. I like the idea of a drum machine so i can run it through pedals and reverb it out, glitch it out, etc etc. If plug-ins can do that too then cool. It'll need to go from good indie drum sounds a la dark electro pop (think more modern 80's) to hip hop / electro / industrial ish stuff....

Op-1 is great too...
Sr-16 is good, but prefer hr-16 for programming[and you can switch the sound e proms]

It all depends on budget too...

A nice midi sequencer and drum samples for something like the s330 will do well too [or a korg m1]

The sequencer is the real trick. Futuretro, midibox, and others will help.

Korg Electribes (the old kind) are very good, plentiful and cheap. $100-400.
MPCs sound good but are very tedious to use.

If you have a big wad to blow look into Elektron stuff and the Dave Smith Tempest.

The Elektron gear I had (mdmkiiuw+, monomachinesfx6) was the most fun gear I ever had...kicking my self for selling them.

Cost isn't a concern. Just want quality sounds, intuitive and easy to use design.

Funny you just mention Elektron cause i was just going to ask if anyone has used the Elektron Machinedrum SPS-1 UW. I like the demo i just watched of that one.


I should actually say i'm going to use this for ambient stuff more than anything else.... but want to be able to make full sounding drum tracks as well.

The Machinedrum has Midi In, Out, Thru so I'd be really surprised if you wouldn't be able to sync it with a DAW/Mother 32.

And I know you only do all this for recording, otherwise I wouldn't recommend it.

I don't like it as a DAW at all, but for "drums" programming is really flexible, the workflow is nice and simple and there's a lot of weird and cheesy kits/patterns out there that you can use for !rock stuff. The stock fx are decent enough too IMO.
