Have we had a discussion about the pedalboards themselves? WIll I ever escape the the pedaltrain blackhole? I don't know, I keep deliberating between expanding to a Novo 24 to get more pedals or keep my classic jr to limit myself. My problem with that lies in my pedaltrain pro, which was a fucking enormous error of a purchase which I can't even properly sell afaik. I don't want to get the novo 24 and go through that shit again. Maybe I'm just overthinking about this in some perfectly sober drunk rambling.

What alternatives to PT do I have? Pros? Cons?

I have a gator board, but it's like the exact same as a pedaltrain. I kind of wish mine was a little smaller. Mines like the size of a pt2. I kind of liked the puzzle of economy when I had my smaller board I made. I regularly think the blackbird boards look pretty cool. Might get a small one in the new year. Then I'll have the small, rad board and the big, wild, also rad board.

I used PTs for a long time, got sick of having to take the board out of the bag, had a case type board made to a specific size.. took three to get the perfect size actually.. the first two are great for storing all my other pedals..

Gator do make a smaller version of that board.

I think building your own board is the best option. That way you have the option to make it any size you need.

I agree 1000%. Go DIY home depot style.
It's actually a really fun weekend project with a circular saw, titebond glue and some ring shank nails.
I used light pine 1x3s for the surface and thick plywood for the angled legs. Custom dimensions, you can drill port holes, easy to customize, being solid wood.
Gave it a thick polyester finish for the velcro to stick better.
I'm really happy with mine.

I'm using two Lyt 32 boards right now, but in my studio only. I like the flexible upper tier. I don't consider them "road worthy", but for in the studio, where you won't be moving them around much, or very light gigging, they're fine. They do sell ATA cases for them as well, though on the road, it's not the case that's going to be the problem. Personally, I don't gig anymore, so I don't need ATA grade. Price / value ratio is OK, considering what I value my time at if I were to build something. At $109, beat the hell out wasting time cutting, gluing, screwing, painting plywood. Unless you REALLY need something particular...

Pedaltrain is hard to beat due to the pretty good strength/weight ratio of their boards. I also find for routing ease that I can't deal with a flat board - gotta get those slats!

Extra/scrap fence posts [dried], salvage office carpet, and about 1 hour worked for me. Found a boschammer case for 3$ at home depot...worked for years. Hinged the board to make right angles or one long straight line...[no stepping over]. Then I went to two pedals and just used it as a carry case and took off the hinge...half size [was about 20" long...and still pretty big for an mt-2 and big ehx ring mod]

I'm actually wanting a new board already. I would LOVE to do a custom metal one, but fuck me they cost so much. I may go full DIY after I move houses. Not sure yet. There are things I want on board that won't fit and I feel like I could make it the exact way I want to if I just did it myself.

I agree with everything, really. I had a Tone Snob board as well, and while all the homemade boards are well built, I just don't see wood boards lasting years and years especially under gigging conditions.

I've also thought about building myself a board when we temporarily move in a couple months. I also thought of getting my father-in-law, a professional welder, to make a metal board for me.

The only thing I don't like about Pedaltrains are the spacing of the slots. Like JRs and PT2s are fine since you can only really fit 2 rows of pedals but the deeper board, pt3s and pros were you can fit 3 rows, it seems like the middle row would be balances on the middle bar, not really providing good stability. Or am I just crazy

The fixed that with the new line, iirc. That also made all of their boards a bit taller and with one more row. That why I was looking at the Novo 24, which is a Pedal train 2 with one extra row and smaller spacing between bars.

I made mine from a former school library cart (an old one, so quality wood). Did two the same size, and I built them so they angle up a bit for easier use. I like small, compact boards so it's perfect for me. Never gigged with them, but i can't imagine them not lasting.
