Prerecording Samples In Loopers

Hey there friends.

I was never interested in loopers that you could save pre-recorded loops on, but now I am.

I'm looking for one that I could have pre-recorded drum samples on, nothing complicated, just a sampled kick, snare, and thick crash cymbal. I'm not really sure how well pre-recorded stuff translates into a live setting, so I don't know if you need some MIDI time-keeping or whatever.

The Digitech Stereo JamMan looks like it would do what I want and more, but I've also read that those things don't provide the best sound quality and that there are volume issues.

Basically I'd just like to have some pre-recorded drum samples that I can have stored, and everything else I would be looping live. And I'd like to be able to do it in stereo with two amplifiers, although I don't really get how stereo loops would sound unless you mixed them a certain way.

P.S. I want a pedal, and not a computer or smartphone, etc.

Yes, it werks as a typical simple looper. And that's what the gf and I use for playing pre-recorded stuff.

You do everything with 1 switch for rec, play, overdub.
I would never use it as a "live looper" though.

I'll need something that I can do "on-the-fly", but also can do prerecorded stuff.

Maybe I should try out the JamMan stereo... hopefully it's not as bad as some people say.

the Boss RC-3 stores loops and you can import WAVs too.

i've heard that gripe about the jamman as well but for what you'd want i think it has the perfect functionality

Cool. I think people talk about problems with balancing the input gain and the output gain or something.

Really the ONLY thing I'll want to have pre-recorded is very simple drum parts. Kick. Snare. Kick kick snare. Crash. Repeat. So if I can get them in there, and then do everything else on the fly and have consistent volumes, it will be no problem.


Does anyone actually use the Pigtronix Infinity Looper? I feel like it's so expensive I've never heard of anyone using one.

yeah and I've never experienced volume issues when importing wavs. would probably be worth it to go with the 30

I use a JamMan Stereo for playing back keyboard / synth loops between songs in our set. Those pesky guitarists seem to take forever to tune up, so we didn't want any dead air on stage. I use a DAW or an Infinity Looper to make the initial loops, then I transfer them to the JamMan Stereo using the JamManager app. I have noticed if you change loops while a loop is playing the JMS will crash. Other than that it's very solid and I like being able to change loops by foot rather than reaching down like you have to do on the Infinity.

I guess the problem would be if you want to record multiple live loops on top of one of your stored tracks, you'd have to keep or delete the whole thing, since you'd be overdubbing directly onto it.

That's a good point and one that I have considered. I figure I could really frickin' practice everything out so I don't screw up for sure, but I realize that fuck-ups are inevitable. So I figure I can have three or four backups of each drum loop for each song and yes, I'd be recording over the stuff, but if I mess up, I can just use a fresh one.

However, if I have a looper with two channels or whatever, two loops, I can use one exclusively for drum samples and then do all the guitar work on-the-fly on the other loop.

One thing I think I need to do is make a map of how I want it all to work. For instance, I don't really know how the stereo part works with stereo loopers... I reckon if you record into it with a mono single, it's not going to do some magical thing in stereo on the output.

With something like the Infinity Looper or RC-30, I guess I could maybe direct the drum track one way (L) and the guitar stuff the other way (R).

I have a question about the JMS too so I guess I'll put that in the next post.

That's too bad about the JMS crashing when you change loops. I thought that was probably a major selling point of the JMS was that you could switch loops hands free.

Sounds like if it did exactly what it was supposed to with good sound quality, the JMS would be the best choice considering its price and all.

BUUUUUUUT I think the Pigtronix is probably the way to go for me considering that I can pre-load pre-recorded drum beats and then create live loops what would sync along to the drums.

Or am I missing something and that isn't possible? With the Infinity Looper, I can pre-record drum loops (or drum accompaniment) on Loop 1 and then sync my live looping to it from Loop 2?
