Simple delay with built in Freeze?

Post by Science Amps »

Ok, maybe this is obvious, but I'm a real dummy when it comes to pedals (more of an amp guy perhaps). I need help finding a simple digital delay that allows you to do a momentary hold (ala Freeze), then when you let off, goes back to regular delay mode.

I'm looking to basically add another layer of guitar noise while doing noise, but just for the short moment I'm holding down the pedal and going wild :animal: . It would be fine if the hold/freeze interrupted the the delay function, but it would be even better if the delay kept working... Hope that makes sense.

If I understand correctly, there is no normal delay function when in Hold mode on a Boss DD-3 (et al.) pedal, correct? I found the DOD DFX9, with it's "Infinite Hold" function, but that ones seems kinda tricky for my application because you tap the pedal for the hold after you starting playing the small section you want to hold, then have to tap again for turning off. I'm just using this for short bursts of noise/feedback, and think I will definitely screw up turning it off like you have to with the DFX9. I was also looking at the 2-pedal old Digitech 1002, but I'm honestly confused as to how the two pedals interact.

Any recommendations would be great, or if I really just need a EHX Freeze coupled with a delay to do what I need to do.

Hey Alex! I think the blue digitech delay would do what you're after with holding the note using the second footswitch. From what I can recall that is all that that footswitch does.

A freeze after a delay would drone the note for as long as you hold your foot down or if you had it in latch mode as long as you wanted before you clicked it off.

The blue digitech loop would be a little more glitchy than the freeze.

I feel like the dd5 or the dd6 does something like this? Maybe it's the dd5 warp mode that I am thinking of

This one may be interesting: http://zcatpedals.com/?dir=view&id=hold

I haven't played one, but I've had the reverb + hold, which was well built and really nice sounding.

Hey, thanks! Yeah, I should have mentioned that I was using my drummer's DD6 in Warp, but I am looking for some thing that doesn't just go into full blown oscillation, which is what it seems like a lot of pedals do with a 2nd warp type of switch. I most recently was using an old DL4, and setting one preset as the "hold" with short repeats and long feedback, but it was not as seemless as the warp (albeit it didn't totally go out of control, which I liked.)

So you think the Digitech PDS1002 can do a momentary hold while keeping the delay a flowin'? Those things sure do have the 90's mojo. Haha.

Thanks, yeah, actually one of those in for sale on CL near me and I thought that was the ticket, but I realized the hold is only for the chorus. In delay mode the 2nd button only functions as a tap tempo unfortunately.

PDS pedals are different. You can't really escape the "click" of the loop re-starting, because they're quite oldschool regarding that. so not really. Plus if I remember correctly, you lose the delay once you engage the repeat hold

SuperEgo with a delay in the effects loop would do a great job. If you're not set on delay, the Old Blood Noise Endeavors Procession has a hold footswitch that engages an infinite reverb and sounds quite different than a Freeze or other "granular" type hold.

what about the EHX Cathedral? I've never used one, but i notice that there is a pre-delay knob on there. maybe someone else can chime in?

Superego is a great idea!

I just use the Freeze with my delay for pretty much the same thing that you're looking for.

Boss dsd-2 and dod fx-94 can do stuff kinda like that, but it is a triggered sample. It isn't exactly the same but could work. Dsd-2 is reversed though (sample...then holding the switch gives delay) and needs a trigger CV signal. Probably too different from what you are looking for.

A raptio after a delay with the mix set full wet might work.

i can do this with my echolution 2 with the extra foot controller (expensive though). You can hit the octave switch to make the freezing loop go all crazy too

The EHX cathedral does have a freeze function when you hold the other footswitch down!

DD 7 doesn't freeze.

Hit up the zcat dude and see if he can build it for you. He's rad.

That Zcat looks pretty cool.

But I would just go with an EHX Freeze.

cathedral will let you do this

timebender will freeze but you have to hold it down till it locks in
then you can play over it but only clean
the delays on the pitchfactor will do this (again not simple)

I think one of the solidgoldfx pedals will do this
