Honoring copyrights. [ split from community suggestions ]
i think you should take an official stance on respect of other people's copyright here
like, draw a line in the sand, and pick a side...
either: "We don't respect copyright and it's ok to promote software piracy and threats of violence towards copyright holders who want their hardware, software or trademarks respected"
or: "We respect copyright and it's NOT ok to promote software piracy, or to make violent threats towards copyright holders who want their hardware, software or trademarks respected"
---------
considering that multiple manufacturers have their own representative subforum here, it should be obvious which stance the forum should take
but considering the behaviour of some forum members in their posts, and the "pile-on" behaviour of others, it leads one to wonder.... and hopefully the immature attitudes of some aren't seen by others as reflecting on the companies who are seeking representation at this forum.
thinking hard about this is my 'community suggestion'
thanks for your consideration.

Re: community suggestions / comments / changes
Drone I do agree with you on this.
Yes I did bashing, but I have a problem with Trademarking/copy writing other peoples work.
Which to me is similar to theft.
look at Svetlana for example. the real company had to rename their products winged C to sell them here.
and I also have a problem with companies cloning existing products.
Now I have no problem with some one making a clone of something built by a company that no longer exists. But I would still call it a clone and not claim that I was the only one who could make them right (even though my ego says I probably am), and say that nobody else should ever be able to make one. or even sell a used one.
Do you shut down an auction of a '70s original because you now own the name and this may take a buyer away from your clone?
I have a problem with those who would shut down every auction on ebay if it had Metal or Mariachi in the title or description.
Woops that's me. Hmm... on second thought... if they just pay me a little...

Hey MM, I agree with you completely, and I think we both share the same opinion of vultures who 'pick up' copyrights and brands they didn't invent in order to cash in or drive business to themselves.
And I don't think there's anything wrong with being upset that an eBay auction has been foxed because one of these people doesn't like the fact that a product is being compared to a brand they are trying to 'protect'.
That behaviour is pathetic in my humble opinion.
But when the reaction becomes 'let's throw a brick through their window' I feel we have taken an even lower road and have lost any right to complain or be upset, this is only justified (again in my opinion) if we make a decision that we don't respect other's rights.
Sorry if I seem touchy - I normally wouldn't even mention it but this comes just days after another member here has been promoting software piracy on the board and using the old and stupid arguments that 'it doesn't cost the developer a sale'.
That one hits me close to home as software development is how I make a living and this very attitude HAS cost me personally a great deal of money (something I've never had lots of) over the 12 years I've been in this business.
Finally I bring this up as I really like this community and think it has a lot of potential. But when stuff like this is allowed to come up unchallenged it ultimately makes us all look like a bunch of clowns.
In my opinion.
Thanks! Really appreciate your thoughts on this.
By the way, I'm hoping to win that auction. If you end up shipping that pedal to Canada thatll be me!
More stuff with hot chicks on it please

Re: community suggestions / comments / changes
I'm 20 years old. I go to college and it's certainly not free. I have a job and I really make no money at all. The money that I do make goes to car insurance, books, necessary expenses, etc. My parents never had much and to say the least I don't live a very easy life. Playing, writing, and recording music have always been the few things that got me through the day.
Now, I'm certainly not proud of pirating software for myself, but if I want to use something of professional quality (which I feel the music I make deserves,) I simply have no other alternative. And believe me, if I could afford those ridiculously expensive programs, I would pay with no second thoughts.
See, the capabilities of the software is worth more to me than money, and I appreciate what you and people of your profession do. I, however, am in no way able to afford it. I don't simply shun the idea of paying for things and hoard all of my money.
I apologize if I, personally, have caused you any hardships by pirating, but seriously man, nobody's writing tutorials on how to steal the fruits of your labor here. We're just trying to talk about fuzz and yes, sometimes we get carried away with our silliness, but it's nothing worth stickin yer finger in a lightsocket over.
Stay groovy.

Re: Honoring copyrights. [ split from community suggestions ]
my family deserves no less than the safest car for me to move them around on the dangerous roads of my city.
I'm a software developer and as such have a low income, what little money I get goes to licensing code that is used in my project, paying for packaging of the software I sell, and essential distribution needed to get my software boxes to dealers.
As I said, my family really deserves the very best, safest and most professional cars.
So I'm gonna go and steal a Mercedes, maybe a Volvo.
And since my music, which i don't make money from, but I have the most respect for, deserves the highest quality tools, I'm going to steal some PRS guitars from some dude's basement.
If it's not obvious, I'm being sarcastic. In the world of music software, there are free choices that are every bit as professional and capable as what the big boys will sell you. If you think the paid-for stuff is better it's because you've been suckered by the money they spend on marketing.
I'm going to go puke for a minute. Then do what I can to feed my kids because of this goddamn spoiled, immature attitude is so common it makes me completely regret going into software to make a living, but it's too late now.
for fuck's sake man.

Re: Honoring copyrights. [ split from community suggestions ]
This'll be a long one.
First, you believe your family deserves the best. I admire that, really. But that is a silly sentiment, because every one of us here is a son or a daughter who deserves the best. I was never provided with the best treatment. I was never given "everything." I probably received less than your family receives from you now. I do not feel sympathetic for you, and to be honest, I'm sorry that you feel the need to use your children as a vice for pity. You're not the only one experiencing money problems around here. I've been living in my house for my entire life and there's a good chance we may lose it very soon. (And not because of software piracy.)
Second, typically a software developer makes somewhere upwards of 50K a year. And that's a graciously low estimate for the sake of cutting you some slack. Either you've got a low paying job, a terrible degree (or none at all,) or you simply spend frivolously. With 50+K a year, a second income, and some good planning, you should be able to provide comfortably for you and your family.
As an add-on, my cousin (who lives four houses away) just put an extension on his house, owns a boat, two cars, two kids, and is married. His career started in software development and now he sells state-of-the-art televisions. If the market is bad, you adapt. You're a software developer. Act smart.
Third, saying that free music software is anywhere near as powerful a program as ProTools or even helpful in becoming familiar with the industry standard is preposterous and blatantly untrue. Compare Paint to Photoshop. You can't be very good at your job if you believe that.
I typically avoid these kinds of conflicts because I see them as childish and futile. I know that I will not convince you of anything and vice versa. But saying that my attitude was "spoiled" and "immature" offended me. I am, in no way, spoiled and/or immature. How could I be spoiled if I have very little, and soon, a significant amount less? Jeez man, I'm about to lose my home but I'm not blaming anyone. I am appalled that you would call me immature when your argument consisted of dramatic sarcasm, exploitation of your family, and personal attacks. Perhaps you should read over what you write before you post.
Finally, what exactly are you doing here? The only things I've seen you post are insults that you sling at software pirates. You could probably be spending that time working and feeding your starving children.
I'm not going to post on this thread or about this topic anymore. I wouldn't want to be viewed as an instigator similar to the South Park debacle.
P.S.

who is comparing paint to photoshop? ever heard of Gimp?
Pro Tools sucks, ever used Reaper?
Actually, never mind....you've convinced me with your highly refined argument.
Steal away, seems like you must be "right".
And you bring up another great point: what am I doing here?
I'm obviously in the wrong place. I won't bother any of you anymore.
I'm sorry I offended you by asking that you respect the law and the rights of creators. I won't ask that of you anymore.
Goodbye. For the record: You're spoiled and immature.
