Need an amp to fuzz with

Post by BananaMango99 »

If anyone can help with recommendations or suggestions... I finally worked out what it is I want in an amp.The following clips will demonstrate.

Both these clips I am playing in, I am using the same guitar and similar fuzz pedals. Note the difference though:

(1) Scuffham S-Gear modeling software with EQD Dirt Transmitter:
Around 1:20:
https://soundcloud.com/kristopher-karp/numb-jam
The high register notes retain the same level of messy fuzzyness as the lower register notes. Love it.

(2) Peavey Classic 30 with ENGL cab and Zvex Fat Fuzz Factory:
Around 5:50:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SIL-h8mJeWs
The high register notes lose their fuzzyness, and become very clear and sharp. Almost clean, to my ears. *This is a similar phenomenon I've noticed on ALL tube amps I've tried the fuzz pedal on: Orange AD30, Fender Twin, Marshall JMP, Peavey Classic... the high register notes are losing their fuzz and becoming clear/sharp. I don't want this! I want the same messy fuzzyness that I'm somehow able to get on my S-Gear modeling software... but I want it in a real tube amp!

They're all but unavailable here in Oz... there is a guy who makes replica VT40s, which I believe is the same thing? If only I could try before I buy, but I might take a punt on it...

Ah, I didn't know you were in the land of Oz.
How cranked do you run your amps?

As cranked as I could for that gig without damaging people's ears, that was with the Classic 30... which is not all that cranked really. Same with our rehearsal where I used the Twin and Marshall JMP. There's a few settings I'd like to try next time - I wonder if I used not enough pre-amp distortion for example. I had the JMP with Volume 2 (master volume??) at max and Volume 1 (preamp??) at 2-3... very clean setting

You're not using a dirty enough amp for that sound in your first clip fed with that type of fuzz.

And who cares what the power section is if it sounds right to what you're looking for?

Don't get me wrong, I love my Hot Rod Deluxe - but I also love my Jazz Chorus and Mustang V w/4x12.

Right tool for the right thing, and that thing is enough volume and able to get the sound you want.

Hmmm, how would you say your Jazz Chorus differs from the likes of Fenders, Marshalls, Oranges?

JC is closer to the Fender clean, just a bit more hi-fi, reverb isn't quite Fender. I can dial in something very close.

Fender it depends on what you're gunning for - tweed, BF, modern, etc.

Marshalls and Oranges I don't have much use for - I'm a "you can't take distortion away" when it comes from the amp guy.

A bit more hi-fi... That could suit my fuzz, if you mean what I think you mean... Ok another amp I will test out: the JC120

Yea, it's got very full definition, and amplifies stuff that other amps sweep under the rug. It and a BF-type Fender circuit are my personal alltime favorite stack together standbys.

It's a staple of the early shoegaze stuff. Look at backline photos of the era, and it's Jazz Chorus until you puke both because they were relatively cheap after the New Wave crash and because they took beyond high gain and effects so well.
